Package kick-starts 64bit Linux development
LynuxWorks has released the industry's first preconfigured board support package (BSP) based on the Linux 2.6 kernel for the Apple PowerPC G5, the world's first 64bit desktop processor
The PowerPC G5 is the fastest PowerPC processor ever created, featuring Apple's next-generation architecture. The LynuxWorks BlueCat Linux 5.0 BSP will offer customers a single source of stable embedded commercial technology for development using the PowerPC G5 processor. BlueCat Linux 5.0 is an implementation of the Linux model enhanced for use in embedded systems ranging from small consumer devices to large-scale, multi-CPU systems.

In addition, the BlueCat Linux BSP supports running 32bit processor applications, allowing developers to seamlessly transition to 64bit processing support.
PowerPC G5 represents LynuxWorks' second BSP based on the Linux 2.6 kernel, having previously introduced the x86/Intel IA-32 BSP.
The increased real-time behaviour of Linux 2.6 is quickly becoming the standard for Embedded Linux developers.
To meet the growing needs of its customers, LynuxWorks is aggressively pursuing full Linux 2.6 kernel support to allow developers to take advantage of advanced features such as improved real-time performance, easier porting to new computers, support for large memory models and microcontrollers, and an improved I/O system.
