Software maps basestation interaction

Link Microtek has a new software package for assessing the cumulative RF (radio frequency) fields produced by multiple mobile-phone basestations in a local community

Designed to calculate and display RF field intensities in an easy-to-understand graphical format, the Telstra RF-Map software is aimed at local authorities, planning consultants, telecommunications companies and any other organisations wishing to assess the environmental impact of radio communications antennas.

Of particular interest to telecommunications companies will be the software's use of near-field and antenna-aperture corrections, which enable it to perform accurate calculations of RF emission levels very close to antennas and antenna arrays.

In typical applications, the site details and antenna characteristics are loaded by an engineer, and RF-Map then calculates the surrounding RF emission levels, displaying the results in a choice of graphical formats to suit the user's requirements.

Advanced map imaging features allow the graphical plots to be overlaid on drawings or maps, thereby providing a clear picture of field strength values in specific locations.

Emission levels are displayed in a choice of five standard units or as a percentage of ICNIRP (International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection) public exposure limits.

As well as calculating the fields from mobile-phone basestations, RF-Map can be used to assess other types of radiocommunications antennas, including broadcast, paging, amateur radio and two-way radio systems.

The software can even calculate cumulative emission levels for shared radio sites, where several different antennas are mounted on the same mast.

RF-Map includes a comprehensive database of antenna data covering all common radio communications technologies, and this can be updated as and when required.
