Lanner has released an FCC CE-certified rugged embedded system suitable for transport applications, including fleet management, entertainment and security.

The LEC-5520 system is built off the Intel Atom central processing unit, which offers WiFI, 3G and GPS communications along with four-channel real-time H.264 video capture and hardware compression.

The embedded system combines real-time communication capabilities with a DVR.

Vehicles can be tracked through the onboard GPS module, while security can be provided through four cameras.

Updated information can be displayed to the driver, while entertainment can be provided to passengers.

Information can be sent back via mobile 3G signals.

The LEC-5520 is designed for vehicles such as buses, cash vans, emergency vehicles and trains.

Eric Chiu, Lanner's embedded computing director, said: 'The LEC-5520 is carefully designed to incorporate industrial electrical and mechanical features that make this box as rugged as possible.

'With the added features of GPS modules, 3G cellular communication and WiFi, the LEC-5520 is an ideal platform for any intelligent transportation application.

'The addition an FCC CE certification helps assure our customers of Lanner's manufacturing and QA processes,' he added.

The LEC-5520 utilises an onboard H.264 codec chip to convert captured footage into high-quality video.

This enables the LEC-5520 to maximise the amount of video captured onto its single hard drive.

Video is captured through four BNC analogue inputs, enabling the use of lower-cost and more reliable analogue video cameras.

This platform is built around the 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, which, through utilising less electricity and giving off less heat, allows the LEC-5520 to be a fanless system, thus improving reliability in the field.

Besides the input/output (I/O) for the DVR, the platform has both HDMI and VGA video outputs.

In terms of communication, there is gigabit Ethernet, WiFi, 3G mobile communications and a GPS module for tracking.

The LEC-5520 includes a wide power input range (10-36V), dual power in via DC jack and Phoenix contact and 12VDC/1A out to power peripherals such as cameras and sensors.

Other hardware specifications include an internal 2.5in (6.4cm) hard drive bay, a Compactflash socket, four USB 2.0 ports, two high-speed serial UARTs, an RS-485 serial port, an alarm/relay and 1Gb of DDR2 memory IC onboard (expandable to 2Gb via So-DIMM).

Lanner provides an SDK and reference software to help customers get started even more quickly.

The Eyeshot 2000 Control Panel software provides basic features for camera control, PTZ, file storage and streaming, as well as advanced features including motion detection, night detection and scalable video coding.

The Eyeshot 2000 Control Panel can be used for evaluation purposes and the completed application, Eyeshot 3000, can also be made available.

The system supports Linux and Windows and the SDK includes features for alarm I/O, streaming, RS-485 control and display.

The LEC-5520 is currently available in limited supply for sample orders.
