Kuka Controls, a leading developer of real-time operating system software, has released a new version of VxWin, a real-time extension that allows Wind River VxWorks and Windows XP to reside concurrently on a single processor. The combination of Windows XP Embedded and VxWorks on a single system capitalises on the advantages of each operating system while eliminating the need for a second CPU for HMI visualisation. With these new features VxWin 3.0 is completely binary compatible with VxWorks.

The VxWin extension is one of two nonproprietary Kuka products that allows developers to add Windows XP to real-time systems based on Windows CE and Wind River VxWorks without adding an additional processor or CPU.

The addition of Windows XP standardises connectivity with the enterprise, offers a selection of high-end graphical interfaces as well as availability of the wide range of Windows XP applications.

Use of a single system also increases overall reliability while lowering hardware and programming costs and reducing power consumption and system size and weight.

"Recognising VxWorks' key position in the real-time industrial market, these VxWin features will accelerate the use of Windows XP to enhance graphics and connectivity of real-time applications when those requirements exist", notes Gerd Lammers, Director of Sales and Marketing Worldwide.
