PCI platform powers protocol convertor
Aculab's GroomerII is a high-density, flexible switching engine powered by an off-the-shelf PCI system supplied via Kontron UK
As global telecommunication infrastructures grow and interact, network operators, service providers, alternate carriers, switching equipment vendors and systems integrators all need to support protocol conversions and complex call routing between a variety of otherwise incompatible network interfaces.

Aculab's GroomerII is a high-density, flexible switching engine that can easily be customised for a variety of application requirements.
Typically deployed between private networks or PBX/ACD switches and public networks with incompatible interfaces, GroomerII provides not only the appropriate protocol conversions, but also offers least-cost routing, alternate routing (ideal for fallback scenarios), number translation and call data records.
GroomerII is based on Aculab's highly successful E1/T1 PCI digital network access cards, integrated in a highly reliable rack-mounted computer platform.

Aculab has tested the GroomerII to perform consistently with a throughput of up to 150,000 calls per hour and for a maximum call throughput, without failure, of 424,000 calls per hour.
The demands imposed by this high level of performance were important factors in Aculab's selection of Kontron UK as its partner to provide the rack-mount computer platform for GroomerII.
Aculab needed a partner who could quickly deliver a reliable, consistent and proven solution - Kontron has long been recognised as an industry leader in providing reliable platforms for communication and mission critical applications.
Kontron's proposed solution used an off-the-shelf system with a customised front panel, as part of the standard Omnix product offering, with Aculab's own branding.
Aculab accepted the proposal after submitting it to its rigorous purchase supplier approval and audit process.
The platform for GroomerII is Kontron's 6U Omnix 600, a 10-slot multiple PCI system that is an ideal flexible solution for Aculab.
The Omnix 600 offers features, such as hot-swap redundant power (110/240V AC or 48V DC), RAID and system monitoring, ensuring high availability and resilience.
Kontron manufactures the system, including the backplane, single board computer (SBC) and chassis, so continuity and longevity of supply are assured.
The SBC is designed in line with the latest Intel road maps, to which Kontron, as an integral member of the exclusive Intel Applied Computing Platform Provider (ACPP) programme, has early access.
This access ensures that GroomerII will be supported by the technology of today and of tomorrow.
