Kaparel joins High Speed Backplane Initiative

Kaparel Corporation has become a member of the High Speed Backplane Initiative (HSBI).

Kaparel Corporation has become a member of the High Speed Backplane Initiative (HSBI). The purpose of the HSBI group is to develop serial link technology capable of sending data at rates of 4.976 to 6.375Gbit/s across a backplane environment, up to a distance of 30in including two connectors. In future, the HSBI group will address 10Gbit/s and higher datarates over the backplane.

The HSBI brings together leading network, system, optical, semiconductor and connector companies from both the telecommunications and data communications markets.

The founding member companies are: Agilent, Cadence, Gennum Corp, Intel, Marvell, Mindspeed, Texas Instruments, Tyco Electronics and Velio Communications.

In addition to the founding members, Kaparel is one of the 28 other companies contributing to the specification.

The HSBI will create an interoperable solution for higher speed backplanes by addressing issues associated with electrical signalling and protocol.

Specifications will be developed that define basic I/O levels and performance levels achieved when interfacing to the backplane environment.

To address multiprotocol support, the HSBI will develop specifications for 8B10B, Sonet/SDH, and 64B66B encoding schemes, so that they may be carried over an HSBI link.

"With the efforts of the HSBI to ensure high-speed serdes interoperability, systems vendors can meet their growing backplane bandwidth demands with multisourced parts that deliver 6 to 10Gbit/s speeds", noted Joel Goergen, Chief Scientist at Force 10 Networks.

"Interoperability between the devices is essential to create an environment where parts vendors continually improve their products with respect to cost, power, and receiver sensitivity - things that are essential for the systems vendors to remain competitive".

Jacques Houde, Director of Engineering for Kaparel stated, "HSBI will be important in the definition of next-generation products.

A HSBI draft specification has been issued to the committee, with completion expected by the end of 2002.

In addition to the actual specification, an interoperability test specification will also be released, which will enable interoperability testing of different vendors' HSBI links.
