Insight Electronics and inSilicon Corp have announced the availability of the Universal Serial Bus (USB) 1.1 device controller for Xilinx FPGAs

This product enables customers to achieve quicker time-to-market using proven inSilicon technology within field-upgradeable products from Xilinx. The core provides an interface between the USB function device and the USB host controller. An agreement between inSilicon and Insight, Xilinx's leading distributor and design source, authorises Insight to integrate inSilicon's IP into its Xilinx FPGA portfolio.

The inSilicon technology bridges an industry-standard USB interface to a simple read/write parallel application interface.

This simple interface shields the designer from the complexities of the USB protocol, and makes it easy to integrate the USB functionality into the customer's target application.

The USB 1.1 Device controller core is production-proven technology.

"This semicustom hardware solution lets us configure the operation of the USB device prior to implementation in the FPGA", said Mark Buckhalt, director of IP at MemecCore.

"This ensures that customers are getting the functionality they need, without wasting valuable FPGA resources".

Commented Gervais Fong, director of marketing at inSilicon: "Memec's expert ability to offer inSilicon's USB in a netlist form makes it more accessible to FPGA customers.

We are very pleased with Memec's clean adaptation and implementation of our customer proven USB 1.1 device technology into the Xilinx FPGA process".

"This USB solution gives our customers the ability to quickly develop an integrated product and provide differentiated value to their own customers", said Greg Provenzano, president and CEO of Insight Electronics.

MemecCore, Memec's IP division that focuses on IP development and deployment, plans to release numerous product solutions that give customers easy access to high-level IP optimized for Xilinx FPGAs, beginning with this offering of the USB 1.1 device controller.
