Regulators integrate their own FETs
Two new single-chip synchronous buck DC/DC regulators from Intersil Corp feature integrated power FETs
The EL7530 and EL7531 are targeted at digital cameras and other portable products including USB devices, PDAs and test instruments powered from a single Li-ion or multiple NiMH or alkaline battery cells. The devices operate and switch automatically from pulse frequency mode (PFM) to pulsewidth modulation (PWM) mode to offer outstanding efficiency over the full low- to high-load-current range.

The devices represent the forth generation of general-purpose PFM/PWM regulators from Intersil and offer an excellent regulation solution complementing Intersil's other lithium ion battery management ICs.
Features include improved efficiency, lower minimum input voltages, and increased continuous output power capability.
The tiny 0.145in2 total footprint and high 94% efficiency makes these regulators ideal for powering space-critical applications in portable, battery-operated devices.

With only 120uA quiescent current in PFM mode and internal soft-start, they provide the performance required for the standby mode and inrush current conditions for a variety of USB-powered applications.
Using an integrated oscillator, the EL7530 and EL7531 operate at a high 1.4MHz switching frequency, thus needing smaller inductors and external components than do other regulators.
Additionally, a sync pin allows for synchronisation to an external clock at up to 12MHz, enabling placement of the switching noise outside of bands critical to the application.
Intersil's EL7530 and EL7531 deliver 600mA and 1A continuous output current, respectively, and operate from input voltages of +2.5 up to +5.5V over an ambient temperature range of -40 to +85C.
The devices are available in a compact MSOP10 and 3 x 3mm DFN10 packages and require only eight components to provide a complete DC/DC step-down (buck) convertor.
A simple resistor divider sets the output voltage from a minimum of 0.8V to a maximum of nearly the input voltage.
Other features include a shutdown mode in which the device only draws 1uA of supply current, an external enable control to turn the device on or off, and a "power good" output signal, which can indicate to another IC that the supply voltage has reached the desired level.
Applications include USB-connected Wi-Fi modems, handheld scanners, and handheld communication devices.
With integrated output FETs and internal compensation, these devices make it extremely easy to design a robust and efficient power supply.
In addition, Intersil offers its customers a high degree of applications support, along with demo boards, sample parts, and technical assistance to ensure that customers achieve the maximum performance and most cost-effective solution possible.
