The latest addition to the Linearlink family of RS485/422 serial interface data transceivers offer 20Mbit/s serial data transfer rates with the high ESD protection to +/-15kV required for most industrial applications. The new the ISL4485E transceiver IC provides allows data to be transmitted at rates up to 20Mbit/s for distances in excess of 120m even in noisy electrical environments such as factories and manufacturing plants.
Typical applications include factory automation, security networks, industrial and process control networks (such as Fieldbus) and building environmental controls.
Operating from a nominal 5V supply, the new ISL4485E is guaranteed to meet these high specifications over a +/-10% tolerance supply range from 4.5 to 5.

That's twice the voltage range tolerance offered by most competing ICs and allows for a less critical and less costly supply design.
The ISL4485E is a half-duplex transceiver offering multiplexed receiver (Rx) inputs and driver (Tx) outputs to support tristate Rx and Tx with disable functions and reduce package size and pin count.
It is fully compliant with RS485 and RS422 specifications and supports up to 32 devices on the same bus.
Balanced differential signalling ensures high noise immunity and long reach for reliable serial data transfer.
Receiver and driver enable pins along with output current and thermal limiting ensure adverse-event survival and increased reliability.
The device is a drop-in upgrade for industry-standard devices of similar nomenclature and provides current limiting and thermal shutdown for driver overload protection.
It is available in an 8-lead SOIC industrial temperature range package.
"Our market strategy has been to develop drop-in upgrade products that bring enhanced performance in signalling and other key parameters to improve reach and data integrity", said Mamoon Rashid, Director of Marketing for Intersil's Analogue Solutions Products.
"Intersil's Linearlink family of RS485/422 transceivers now includes a comprehensive selection of half- and full-duplex 250Kbit/s, 5Mbit/s, 20Mbit/s with the highest ESD protection".
