Intersil reckons its AnyAdapter ISL6292 is the industry's smallest and most advanced Li-ion/Li-polymer battery charger IC

Designed for a wide range of portable and handheld devices, this next-generation charger IC saves valuable board space with its near-chip-scale 3 x 3mm dual flat no-lead (DFN) package while offering the industry's highest thermal efficiency. It also offers full voltage protection, current protection and Intersil's Thermaguard temperature-controlled charge-rate protection.

What's more, the ISL6292 AnyAdapter charger IC accepts a wide range of voltage sources including voltage and current-limited wall-plug modules and USB bus power.

The AnyAdapter ISL6292 operates as a linear charger when the AC adapter is a voltage source by charging the cell in a constant-current (CC) then constant-voltage (CV) profile.

Charge current is resistor programmable up to a maximum of 2A.

The ISL6292 also works with a current-limited adapter to minimise thermal dissipation, in which case, the IC operates as a linear charger but offers the thermal efficiency typically found only with pulse or switching chargers.

The ISL6292 charger's linear topology also generates much less noise than standard pulse and switching charger topologies, making it ideally suited to noise sensitive applications such as smart phones and PDA's with embedded wireless.

Intersil's AnyAdapter technology provides up to 750% less heat generation than competing solutions, thereby us providing a much faster charge time for similar operating conditions.

An internal and trimmed current-sense circuit guarantees 10% accuracy with no bulky external current-sense resistor.

The constant voltage is either 4.1V ( ISL6292-1CRX) or 4.2V (ISL6292-2CRX) with 1% accuracy.

The ISL6292 always preconditions the battery with 10% of the programmed charge current at the beginning of a charge cycle until it verifies that the battery can be fast-charged.

The ISL6292 uses Intersil's Thermaguard protection, which is a thermal-foldback feature that helps ensure safe operation, reduces design complexity and avoids premature charge termination invoked by the thermal shutdown feature of older-generation solutions.

If the operating conditions, which include environment, charge source voltage and charge rate, cause the ISL6292 die temperature to approach a set limit, the internal temperature control activates which automatically reduces the charge current (folds it back) to a safe level to maintain a safe temperature.

In so doing, the charge cycle can continue uninterrupted and without damage to the ISL6292.

As the cell voltage increases with charge, the thermal control permits charge current to increase to shorten the charge cycle.

The ISL6292 provides a fully programmable end of charge indication point, but allows charging to continue until the safety timer automatically terminates charge.

A typical Li-ion cell will charge quite quickly to within a few percent of the maximum cell capacity, but the time required to "top off" the last few percent of remaining charge takes much longer.

The ISL6292 gives the design engineer more flexibility by allowing the system to indicate charge complete to the user in a shorter period of time, while providing maximum charge if the system remains connected to the input source for a longer period of time.

The charger automatically recharges the battery whenever the cell voltage drops below a recharge threshold.

Package options for the ISL6292-1CR and ISL6292-2CR include the 10-pad 3 x 3mm DFN, the 16-pad 4 x 4mm QFN and the 16-pad 5 x 5mm QFN.

All these packages are thermally enhanced, offering low thermal resistance for heat transfer to the board.
