Plasmon has selected Intersil's new blue-laser diode drivers for use in its latest UDO optical data storage drives, which are the first to use the new Blu-ray consumer optical recording standard

Plasmon has selected Intersil's new blue-laser diode drivers for use in its latest UDO optical data storage drives, which are the first to use the new Blu-ray consumer optical recording standard set for high capacity storage of data or video. Unveiled at Comdex, Plasmon's new UDO drives are the next generation of 5.25in professional optical storage technology that uses Blu-ray consumer recording technology to improve optical storage for professional users.

Blu-ray is the proposed successor to DVD and provides the high storage capacity needed to record a full 2h video in HDTV on a single-sided disk or some 13h of standard TV video.

Unlike conventional DVDs with their 4.7Gbyte capacity, UDO drives use blue-laser and phase-change recording technology to provide a massive leap in data storage densities.

Plasmon's first generation UDO products will offer 30Gbyte in storage capacity and are scheduled to ship in 2003.

Future generations will increase capacity to 60 and 120Gbyte and will provide full backward read compatibility.

Intersil's Elantec blue-laser driver ICs help achieve the increased storage capacity required by Plasmon for their new generation of recording and archiving products by providing the higher density, improved waveform fidelity, increased output current, lower power dissipation and reduced noise.

"Plasmon's selection of our new write-strategy blue laser drivers for use in their high capacity storage systems affirms Intersil's continued leadership and outstanding customer support in optical storage technology", said Stephen P Sacarisen, Director of Strategic Marketing for Intersil's Elantec Optical Storage Products.

"Our EL6900 blue laser drivers helped make this UDO application possible and solidifies Plasmon's position as a leading provider of professional optical storage solutions.

We are at the threshold of a very exciting future for blue-laser technology and look forward to expanding our technology leadership through partnerships with leading companies such as Plasmon".
