Dual DACs claim basestation superiority
Intersil reckons its CommLink series of dual 3.3V DACs deliver a higher performance and are more cost effective alternative than conventional DACs for cellular phone systems.

Intersil reckons its CommLink series of dual 3.3V DACs deliver a higher performance and are more cost effective alternative than conventional DACs for cellular phone systems. The new CommLink dual DAC family includes pin-compatible 14, 12, 10 and 8bit devices offering either 130 or 210Msample/s datarates to support baseband or high IF (intermediate frequency) applications. Their high update rate, coupled with superior levels of spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) performance allows hardware designers to meet critical spectral emission targets without having to resort to more complex and expensive interpolating DAC circuitry.
Additionally, their dual-channel structure allows for maximum flexibility for integration into a multitude of architectures including single and multi-carrier digital IF, direct up-conversion and analogue baseband.
As an example, the ISL5929 14bit dual DAC achieves greater than 70dBc SFDR when operating at sampling frequencies up to 210Msample/s and an output frequency centred at 15MHz.
For the 3G cellular basestation market, the device achieves adjacent channel power ratio (ACPR) performance of greater than 71dB at an output frequency of 19.2MHz, while updating at 76.8Msample/s.
For 2.5G Edge, the device yields an SFDR performance of 94dBc at 6MHz offset using a carrier frequency of 11MHz.
The family also includes the ISL5829 12bit DAC, the ISL5729 10bit DAC and the ISL5629 8bit DAC.
The ISL5X29 product family supports all current and next generation cellular protocols and complements the existing ISL5X61A family of single-DAC series.
They can be integrated into a wide range of products including cellular basestations, high-end test equipment, medical imaging, satellite terminal equipment and point-to-point and point-to-multipoint wireless access terminals.
The ISL5X29 series also delivers higher levels of SFDR stability across setup and hold timing on the input, imposing less stringent requirements on input timing and simplifying overall transmitter design.
The 3.3V devices are ideal where more advanced, lower voltages and higher speeds are required and without the need to route 5V to the device.
Excellent gain matching exists between the two channels of the dual DAC series, typically 0.05dB and guaranteed less than 0.14dB.
Superior gain matching increases the performance in quadrature output architectures without the need to manually compensate for imbalances.
The device family also features low power consumption and sleep mode capability, further reducing power consumption in idle channel conditions.
Additionally, Intersil offers a free online CommLink DAC "test drive" evaluation tool on its website.
Simply specify a single-tone, multitone or pattern test file and Intersil will perform the measurement and e-mail spectrum analyser screenshots to the user.
