Intersil has a new range of Endura multiphase PWM controller and driver ICs which have already been selected by Intel for its 2GHz Xeon processor in high-performance single and multiprocessor-based servers and workstations. This new Endura power management solution meets or exceeds Intel's VRM 9.1 (voltage regulator modulation) specifications for the Xeon processor for use in multiprocessor servers and workstations, as well as for the Pentium 4.

The controller features the ability to automatically reconfigure clock frequency based on the number of populated phases sensed, offering designers the flexibility to design both three- or four-phase DC/DC convertors for Pentium 4 or Xeon processors using just a single controller IC.

Endura also allows easy transfer of designs and layouts from one motherboard model to another, dramatically reducing time to market.

Intersil's four-phase solutions operate at over higher 80% power efficiency and at load currents up to 160A, greatly improving overall performance and power handling.

"Intel joins many of the world's top computer manufacturers and has now selected Intersil's Endura-series power management chipsets to power the new-generation of single and dual Xeon processors in workstations and servers", said Rick Furtney, vice president and general manager of Intersil's Analogue Business Unit.

"No other IC supplier can match the phase current balance and efficiency offered by our Endura HIP6300 series four-phase controllers and HIP6600 series MOSFET drivers in a Pentium 4 or Xeon core supply".

Intersil's innovative on-state resistance sensing topology and phase staggering, coupled with other architectural features, enhances the converter's efficiency, improves transient response, reduces ripple and reduces overall bill-of-materials cost by eliminating the need for external current sense resistors.

Other Intersil power products in the Endura HIP6500 series are optimised to provide power control for the Intel 860, 850 and 845 chipsets, memory, I/O and peripheral power for a complete range of PCs, servers or workstations.
