A new addition to Intersil's growing Endura family of power management integrated circuits, the ISL6223, has been selected by Advanced Micro Devices for improved power management for the latest AMD Athlon and Duron processor reference designs for mobile applications. The new Endura device fully supports AMD's advanced PowerNow! technology which delivers next generation power management efficiency for the latest microprocessors resulting in extended battery life and higher performance for notebook computer designs.
Intersil's Endura ISL6223 mobile-computer power management device is a two-phase integrated PWM controller that efficiently regulates core CPU power.
Its architecture allows the CPU core voltage regulator to be completely turned off when the microprocessor is not in use, eliminating voltage generation for the CPU and reducing total system power consumption in highly managed mobile-power environments.
Additionally, it enables on-the-fly voltage identifier changes without any external circuitry.

This newest addition to Intersil's mobile portfolio will help the next-generation of mobile computers to run at full desktop speeds.
Intersil has designed its family of power management devices to meet the demands of existing and next generation mobile computer processors.
"These new Endura devices enable high-speed information access for portable devices", said Rick Furtney, vice president and general manager of Intersil's Power Management business.
"Intersil will continue to work with leading processor developers such as AMD to deliver more efficient power management designs for next generation products".
AMD PowerNow! technology significantly extends battery life in notebook PCs by nearly 30 percent while delivering high performance on demand.
Its combination of software and hardware support allows the processor to run at different frequencies and voltages depending on demand.
The ISL6223 has been approved by AMD, and it is currently incorporated in the Thresher mobile reference design platform for the latest Mobile Athlon and Mobile Duron processors.
"AMD recognises the growing importance of mobile computing and the demand for higher performance and increased battery life", said Rex Meek, Director of Hardware Infrastructure Relations at AMD.
"PowerNow! technology positions us to meet this challenge and Intersil's Endura ICs provide the high efficiency core power management needed to achieve this performance".
The ISL6223 IC is currently available in a 20-pin SSOP.
