A new entrant in the embedded system-on-chip market has successfully raised a total of $3.8 million in a first round of private financing

The investment in Ignios was jointly led by Alice Lab and BTG. The funding will enable the company to take its SystemWeaver technology from the first phase of development through to production. SystemWeaver provides a unique on-chip solution to the real-time system management issues within complex, multicore devices.

An increasing number of SoC designs are deploying multiple cores - microprocessors, DSPs and other coprocessors - to boost system performance.

However, the more cores that a chip contains, the more difficult it becomes for software developers to create applications that can use those cores to their full potential.

"We have developed SystemWeaver in response to clear demand from the industry", explained Mark Lippett, Ignios cofounder and Chief Technology Officer.

"This technology will remove a major barrier to achieving optimal system performance in multicore designs, and will deliver competitive advantage throughout the value chain - from semiconductor companies and OEMs to operating system developers".

"Standardised software-programmable architectures such as multicore ASSPs, SoCs, DSPs and FPGAs are becoming the preferred platforms for OEM applications developers", continued Dan Chester, Ignios cofounder and VP Business Development.

"Our SystemWeaver hardware and software intellectual property (IP) unlocks the performance and price potential for these types of device by handling the key on-chip system management problems that a multicore architecture introduces".

"Our investment in Ignios is motivated by the market potential for this technology and the strong interest that we have seen from several leading semiconductor companies", said Miki Granski of Alice Lab.

"With a solid technology foundation and the scope to develop a significant intellectual property portfolio, Ignios is well-placed to make a big impact in the industry", added Peter Beynon of BTG.

As part of the financing round, Beynon and Granski will join Ignios' board of directors, which includes David MacKay.

MacKay was formerly Executive Vice President and General Counsel for ARM Holdings, where he was instrumental in the development of ARM's intellectual property business model.
