IGG Component Technology has acquired Towcester Technical Services (TTS), a leading acoustic microscopy company with an excellent reputation for component evaluation and failure analysis. The founder of TTS, Tony Howard, will continue to be involved in a consultancy role. Acoustic microscopy equipment previously owned by TTS has been installed at IGG's head office and laboratory facilities in Fareham, Hampshire.

This broadens the test and inspection services offered by IGG, a leading supplier of high reliability electronic components and related services for space, defence, aviation and other harsh environment applications where reliability is critical.

Scanning acoustic microscopy (SAM) is a valuable tool for performing evaluation, failure analysis and screening of plastic-encapsulated semiconductors as well as many other components and materials such as ceramics, ferrites, solder joints and welds.

The technique uses acoustic impedance to produce high-resolution images of a sample's interior structure to detect defects that would otherwise be difficult to find, such as interfacial separation, solderball delamination, and die attach voiding.

These manufacturing and assembly related defects can increase the susceptibility of components to failure in both use and storage.
