Group delay module aids microwave measurements: News from IFR Systems

IFR Systems has added group delay measurement capability to its 6845 microwave system analyser (MSA). Previously available up to 24GHz, the 6845 group delay option adds group delay measurements and frequency modulation for microwave test applications up to 46GHz. Now all 6840 Series models can be offered with a group delay module using an expansion slot inside the instrument.

With the addition of the group delay measurement capability to the entire 6840 Series, including the 6845 46GHz model, a much broader range of users will be able to make group delay measurements.

By using the receiver in the spectrum analyser as a tuned scalar input, the 6840 Series with the group delay option offers a user-friendly and cost-effective solution.

The 6840 Series group delay module allows simultaneous measurement and display of group delay and amplitude response over the full frequency range of the instrument.

Components and assemblies, including frequency translation devices, can be readily characterised for ripple and variation from linear and parabolic using the 6840 Series advanced marker functions.

Measurements in any operator-specified subband within the passband can be displayed as maximum peak-to-peak ripple in amplitude and group delay, maximum slope and maximum rate of change of the slope.

The 6845 group delay range is from 1ns to 10ms with a resolution of 0.1ns and absolute accuracy of 0.5ns.

When making comparative peak-to-peak measurements, the accuracy is generally greater than 0.1ns.

Frequency modulation of the source is provided with the group delay option, from 0.1Hz to 500kHz.
