Integrated Device Technology has introduced the industry's first complete family of universal line interface units (ULIUs), including octal, quad, dual and single densities

These products enable designers to adopt a re-usable approach to line-card design by using a single board that is configurable through software and may be easily rescaled to suit different T1, E1 or J1 port densities and loop lengths. The IDT family of ULIU devices are an extension of the company's existing short-haul line interface units (LIUs) and offer the ability to terminate both long haul and short haul T1, E1 or J1 connections.

The IDT ULIU devices target emerging line-card designs that are used in multi-service provisioning platforms, optical multiplexers, integrated multi-service access platforms, and broadband access equipment.

While the IDT octal and quad ULIU devices support high-density equipment line-card applications, the dual and single ULIU products - in smaller packages and footprints - are designed for lower density line cards, access equipment and applications sensitive to single points of failure.

The IDT ULIU family delivers the industry's most advanced feature set, common across all densities.

The per-channel software impedance matching and line build-out capability give designers the ability to create a single hardware platform with the configuration of each channel left to a software task executed prior to making a "live" connection.

This ability is important as it enables customers to respond to the ever-changing market conditions and applications for communications equipment.

A per-channel, programmable transmit pulse shaping feature allows further optimisation of the pulse mask to address different line conditions.

To further ease the tasks of designers, all IDT ULIU devices integrate per-channel error counters, which keep track of bipolar violations, excessive zeroes and PRBS/QRSS pattern errors.

The counters are sized such that they do not saturate for error rates of at least 10e-2 with one second polling.

In high-density applications, error counter integration conserves valuable pin and register resources within FPGAs or ASICs.

By contrast, competing LIU devices provide a line coding error output for each channel that must be connected to the input pin on an external counter to maintain track of bipolar and code violations.

The IDT ULIU devices ensure standards compliance by meeting or exceeding popular networking specifications by ANSI (T1.102, T1.403 and T1.408), ITU (I.431, CRT12/13, G.703, G.736, G.775, G.823), ETSI (300-166, 300-233) and AT and T (Pub 62411).

The family also supports hitless protection switching for 1+1 redundancy without relays and G.772 monitoring for in-service testing that meets ITU standards.

Installation and testing issues are addressed by eight built-in, PRBS/QRSS pattern generators which, when combined with the internal loopback facilities, pattern detectors, error counters and remote diagnostics, enable many performance tests to be run "offline", without the need to bring test equipment on-site.
