Hunt Engineering has added support for the Camera Link interface to its FPGA based Heron modules

Camera Link is a standard communication interface that was specifically developed by camera and frame-grabber manufacturers for use with vision applications and is widely supported throughout the industry. By providing intellectual property (IP) for the FPGA modules, Camera Link area scan cameras can be connected to a Heron DSP system without the need for an interface customised to a specific camera.

The IP (supplied free of charge with the hardware) can form part of a larger FPGA design, or can be used as supplied to pass the data to C6000 based DSP modules for processing.

The same support exists for RS422 digital cameras and compatible support for analogue cameras will be announced in the near future.

Hunt also offers an image processing library and a standard image processing framework for Heron modules.

Developers can use the framework as a starting point for writing their own imaging application.

Peter Warnes, Technical Director of Hunt Engineering, commented: "These two developments demonstrate the flexibility of the Heron modular system and supporting software.

The application developer can choose his preferred camera and whether to use C6000 or FPGA for his processing.

Consistent interfaces mean he can easily change module or camera without any rewriting or reworking of his application code to support it".
