Hunt Engineering has released HEPC9, a PCI format Heron module carrier, for the Heron DSP range

The HEPC9 is the first carrier board to fully implement Hunt's HEART architecture. HEART (Hunt Engineering architecture using ring technology) is a software configurable internode communications system based on "virtual FIFOs". HEART offers higher inter-node communications speeds as well as the flexibility of software configuration.

Using HEART, a Heron module can transfer data to and from the FIFO at a peak rate of 400Mbyte/s (100Mword/s).

FIFO connections configured in software remove the need for cables, which are a source of unreliability.

Peter Warnes, Technical Director of Hunt Engineering commented: "HEART has been in development for a few years now, and the flexibility and performance of the HEPC9 shows that it has been worth waiting for".

Developers will additionally benefit from a higher performance PCI interface that allows multiple connections between a DSP system and the Host PC.

HEPC9 also offers a fifth (non Heron) module slot that allows interconnection of multiple module carriers, either in the same PC or in separate machines, maintaining the real-time nature of the connection.

DSP system developers now have a choice of module carriers within the Heron range - either a four module slot or single slot carrier, both of which are also suitable for embedded systems.

A software compatible cPCI format HEPC9 is being developed and will be announced in the coming months.

The Heron range of DSP modules includes Texas Instruments' C6000 and Xilinx FPGA modules plus a variety of high speed I/O interfaces.
