Fortune Semiconductor has released an innovative high-resolution analogue to digital convertor and digital subsystem, now available from Hero Electronics. The FS501 is mixed-signal design integrating a high-precision 18bit A/D convertor with a programmable function block containing multiplexers, low-noise amplifiers, comparators and control logic thus offering a complete solution for digitising low-level signals from a variety of sensors such as load cells, strain gauges, thermistors, thermopiles and pressure transducers.
The core of this chip is a differential-input 18bit-resolution ADC with two programmable digital comb filters that output 18 and 12bit samples.
The sampling rate can be varied to provide the most suitable zero-frequency point for maximum noise rejection for example at 50/60Hz.
The FS501 has both voltage and resistance measuring modes, improving the linearity of thermistor measurement.
A standard 4bit parallel port allows connection to a CPU to control all subsystem features, registers and interrupt handling.
A power saving mode is enable under software control.
The design also embeds a dual voltage regulator and low-battery detector and crystal oscillator.
