The Wiznet IIM7100 serial-to-Ethernet gateway module is available now from Hero Electronics.
The IIM7100 interfaces between a serial port and an Ethernet connection to allows a serial I/O port to share data and information via the Ethernet and on to the Internet through the hardwired TCP/IP protocols on the internal W3100A Wiznet chip.
Ideal for remote monitoring or control, this small module can be simply added to existing equipment.
The module's firmware can also be updated over the network.
The standard serial port works with speeds up to 115Kbit/s and interfaces at the ttl level.
The Ethernet side is an MII interface supporting auto-detection speeds of 10/100Mbit/s, other protocols supported are UDP, IP, ARP, ICMP and Ethernet MAC.
The module is a compact 50 x 30 x 10mm and requires 3.3V with a maximum current of 150mA.
The module can be used without change or it can be customised with the DKIIM7100 developer kit (GBP 135), which adds RJ45 and RS232 connectors, indicator LEDs and power supply interface and driver software.
Among the many applications for this module are remote accesses via the Internet or LANs, for example industrial automation, data gathering, instrumentation, medical devices, metering and card readers.
