The new VASA LSI from NTT Electronics is a single-chip HDTV 4:2:2 encoding and decoding solution, and will be the flagship on Stand 4.261 at IBC 2004. For the first time, the VASA (Versatile and Advanced Signal processing Architecture) LSI will be demonstrated using the SC10KE and SC10KD HDTV video encoder and decoder modules, providing broadcast quality 4:2:2 1080i performance in a compact and low power format. With integrated DDR (double datarate memory), these modules greatly reduce design time and eliminate the time consuming and intricate task of having to lay down 1008-pin BGA (ball grid array) packages.
Low power consumption and low latency are two of the main features on this single chip VASA architecture, with an ability to work in full spec 422P@HL and MP@HL and reduced resolution MP@H-14L environments whilst demonstrating high bit rates up to 300Mbit/s (TS).
The VASA chip processes high quality MPEG-2 video in 1080i, 1080-24P, 720P, 480i and 480P formats with a power consumption of less than 3W.
Typical encoder delay (I frame) is 66ms.
With the "era of HDTV" rapidly approaching, there is a growing need for professional quality, smaller and more economical codec devices and NTT Electronics is leading the way.
The VASA technology delivers the reality of high quality, high resolution digital cinema as well as enabling the production of richer and more diverse HDTV programming, particularly important in areas such as films, natural history, live sports broadcasting, music and news events.
Also on display, demonstrating NTT Electronics' commitment to the whole spectrum of the professional MPEG-2 market, will be the SuperENC III MPEG-2 codec LSI providing pseudo HD conversion and the MP2000 MPEG-over-IP solution for standard definition formats, along with the market proven compact standard definition MPEG-2 encoder and decoder modules.
