New video and broadcast applications engineering labs have been opened by Gennum, allowing its customers to test and debug standard and high definition based systems, and even to test full conformity to SMPTE standards. Gennum is investing a six figure sum to equip these labs - eliminating the need for its customers to make this investment. The new labs are located in the UK, to support European customers, and in Japan, and complement its existing facility in Canada.

To support customers using the labs for application development, Gennum has also appointed Vince Harradine as Worldwide Applications Manager, based in Canada, with responsibility for managing all three labs.

Tim McBride will be located in Europe and will be supporting customers at the European lab in Farnham, England.

Gennum's specialised labs will allow customers to test full conformity to SMPTE standards using the Synthesys Research HDVA/SG292 video analyser with integrated signal generator, which can initiate SMPTE test patterns through the test circuit and identify noncompliance.

The world's fastest real time digital oscilloscope, the Tektronix 4GHz TDS7404, will be available to allow engineers to debug their sophisticated high speed designs down to component level.

In addition, an Agilent 8714ET network analyser is installed for the measurement of input and output return loss and a range of signal generators and multi-format, including HD, monitors are available.

Harradine, who brings 21 years of experience with the Research and Development Group of Sony Broadcast and Professional Europe, comments "We see the new labs as an important resource for Gennum customers and they complement the activities of the Applications Engineering Group, which provides expert technical and design-in assistance to customers at any time during the design cycle.

Experienced personnel will be available to provide customers with the support they need for their design, development and test activities".
