Connectors make other methods appear cumbersome
Fujikura Europe will be launching the new ST connector to its highly acclaimed innovative FAST series at the ECOC show in Glasgow this week.

Fujikura Europe will be launching the new ST connector to its highly acclaimed innovative FAST (Field Assembly Simple Technique) series at the ECOC show in Glasgow, Scotland this week. This FAST series has already become the preferred connector type for NTT in Japan and Korea Telecom for fibre to the home (FTTH) installations. With demand for broadband services ever on the increase - a field engineers' work is made easier with this quick, simple and cleanest method of terminations on-site.
Like the FAST-SC Universal connector, the FAST-ST terminates to both 250 and 900um diameter fibre.
This cost effective two for one solution is achieved through a 'staggered' clamping method to the outer coating of the fibre.
With a connectorisation time of less than 30s, including preparation, these field installable connectors make other connector termination methods appear cumbersome, time consuming and expensive.
Both the SC and ST require no specialised tooling except standard fibre preparation tools; this is because each connector comes complete with its own disposable wedge set.
The FAST series has also been factory-polished, eliminating the need for any polishing materials, thereby enabling the preparation and termination of optical fibres in a fraction of the time of other conventional methods.
'The ST connector is a great addition to the series', says Brian Leonard, Product Manager at Fujikura Europe.
'We do plan to launch other connector types within this range and will make the necessary announcements subject to our development schedule'.
He continues: 'The uniqueness of this innovative connector is the disposable wedge set and the simplicity of use for fibre installations inside buildings and floors'.

The FAST series connector's stable optical performance is achieved through its use of V-groove mechanical splice technology, which also eliminates the use of messy epoxies.
The average insertion loss for single mode is just 0.2dB, with a return loss of 55dB, and for multimode GI62.5, the average insertion loss is 0.03dB (0.07dB for multimode GI50.0).
The cost and labour benefits of such a product are evident across most industry sectors: for independent telecomms and datacomms companies, for example, such an affordable solution will make their installations more cost effective; and for the larger organisations, a higher number of installations can be carried out on several sites at any one time.
