Furukawa Electric has developed a 2.5Gbit/s, cooled DFB-LD module in a small package for long reach (LR) and metro applications.
The new product, part of the Fitel brand series, features a built-in thermoelectric cooler (TEC), as well as flexible pigtail and receptacle connections.
To date, signal source DFB-LD modules for DWDM, or long distance 2.5/10Gbit/s transmission, have employed 14-pin butterfly packages, the standard in conventional modules with built-in TEC.
But increasing demand for higher capacity require smaller packages for these applications, notably dwdm pluggable transceiver modules, already introduced by Agilent, Nortel Networks and Agere Systems.
Furukawa Electric's new DFB-LD module features the company's mini-DIL (dual inline) package which offers the same functionality and performance as conventional 14-pin butterfly package modules, yet comes in approximately one-fifth of the size.
The new DFB-LD module is also available at a lower price than 14-pin butterfly modules, reducing manufacturing costs for Furukawa's customers.
The mini-DIL type DFB-LD module also has a pin layout compatible with the 8-pin MSA, conventionally used in uncooled mini-DIL type LD modules.
This pin layout enables customers to deploy the same electric circuit layouts as with conventional uncooled LD modules.
Development on a range of products for 10Gbit/s applications, such as Sonet/SDH-OC192 and 10Gbit/s Ethernet, will continue.
