University alliance brings
two new Chinese labs
Fairchild Semiconductor has signed a strategic multifaceted agreement with the prestigious Tsinghua University in Beijing, China
As a result, Fairchild has established two integrated circuit research and development labs, one in Shanghai and one in Beijing, staffed by design engineers originating from Tsinghua University. The employees at the Fairchild labs are tasked with developing and designing new products to support the company's focus on optimising system power in multiple end market applications.

The agreement also establishes the framework to: collaborate on university research projects; develop recruitment programmes at Tsinghua University; have Fairchild technologists and other senior personnel serve as guest speakers at the school; develop academic outreach programmes for Tsinghua students including site visits to Fairchild facilities; and underwrite a five year grant to the university to further scholastic programmes.
At a ceremony at Tsinghua University, Bob Conrad, Fairchild's Senior Vice President and General Manager, integrated circuits Group, joined Professor Wang Zhihua, Professor and Deputy Executive Director of Tsinghua University's Institute of Microelectronics along with other key members of both organisations to formalise the agreement.
"We're very proud to be working with Fairchild Semiconductor, the leading global supplier of products to optimise system power", said Professor Wang Zhihua.
"Our department has established a strong reputation in the areas of electronics design and engineering over many years, and we feel the agreement with Fairchild will enhance the reputation of both parties on a national and global level".
"We're also pleased with the opportunities this agreement will provide to our students and faculty as well".

"Tsinghua University is acknowledged as one of the world's premier educational institutions, as well as one of China's leading incubators for science and technology talent", commented Bob Conrad.
"Fairchild Semiconductor is proud to be working with an educational leader renowned globally for nurturing China's burgeoning electronics industry and we're honoured that engineers from the university will be instrumental in the establishment of our first integrated circuit R and D centres in China".
"We look forward to the contributions their talents will make, furthering both silicon technology to benefit our customers and to Fairchild Semiconductor's growth plans".
"Our agreement with Tsinghua University is another important step in Fairchild's business strategy as 'the power franchise'".
"Our relationship with the university is one more important component of our emphasis on China, building upon our new 800,000 square foot assembly and test plant in Suzhou, our sales offices there, and our Global Power Resource labs".
"These investments validate the importance of the China market to our business", concluded Conrad.
The agreement represents a major milestone in Fairchild Semiconductor's global development, and will play an important role in the success of the corporation's global power franchise strategy.
Fairchild's business in China has grown rapidly since the company was established in 1997.
Today Fairchild is the leading power components supplier in China, commanding a 12% market share.
In Asia, with $623 million of power component sales in 2003, Fairchild commands more than double the revenues and market share of its nearest competitor.
