Fairchild Semiconductor has achieved ISO14001 certification within its Mountaintop, Pennsylvania facility

With this certification, Fairchild now meets the ISO's rigorous environmental management standards within all six of its major manufacturing facilities around the world. Mountaintop was added to Fairchild's manufacturing capabilities as part of the company's acquisition of Intersil Corp's Discrete Power Division last year.

Additional Fairchild manufacturing facilities are located in South Portland, Maine; West Jordan, Utah; Cebu, Philippines; Penang, Malaysia; and Bucheon, South Korea.

"Fairchild has accomplished an important goal in ensuring all our world-class manufacturing locations meet the internationally recognised ISO standard for protecting employees, the community and the environment", said Laurenz Schmidt, senior vice president of Global Operations.

"Our effort to make certain we have superior environmental, health and safety controls will always be an ongoing process to ensure we are a good global partner, citizen and employer.

Our internal teams have worked tirelessly to elevate our standards and we're very pleased with the results".

Since Fairchild's inception in 1997, the company has been recognised for its environmental, health and safety accomplishments, community service and programme participation.

This includes: the Malaysian Prime Minister's "Hibiscus Award" for Exceptional Performance and Excellent Performance in environmental protection for 1998/1999 and 2000/2001; Malaysia's "Occupational Health and Safety Award" in 1997; OHSAS18001 certification for the Penang, Malaysia plant; the Korean Ministry of Environment's "Green Energy Company" and "Environmentally Friendly Enterprise" awards in 1999; the Cebu, Philippines' "Business for Environment Award" in recognition of Fairchild's commitment to environmental protection in 2002; active participation in the US semiconductor industry Association's (SIA) and Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) partnership to reduce global warming gas emissions; Maine Governor's Environmental Excellence Award 2002, for outstanding efforts to make Maine's environment and workplaces cleaner and safer; award from the Utah Labor Commission for "Continuing Excellence in Safety Programmes" in 2002; charter membership in the Maine Department of Environmental Protection "Step Up" programme for voluntary environmental compliance and continual improvement; hosting training seminars in Malaysia to share environmental management system ideas with over 200 small to mid-size companies; and participation in Malaysia's "Adopt-A-Nest" programme to protect sea turtle nesting habitats.

Established in 1996, the ISO14001 standard specifies requirements for creating an environmental management system that can be certified by a third party.

The standard is applicable to organisations that wish to implement, maintain and improve an environmental management system, assure and demonstrate conformance with its own stated policy and with environmental laws and regulations, and seek certification of its environmental management system.

OHSAS18001 is compatible with the ISO14001, and was created through the combined work of 80% of the world's leading national standards and certification bodies.

It is designed to minimise the risk of accidents and near-miss incidents that employees and other parties may encounter while participating in work-related activities.
