The KTVA product line, the latest in EMC Technology'sThermopad family of temperature variable attenuators, providesstable temperature compensation in designs that operate between18 and 42GHz. The devices come in a low-profile package with asmall footprint of only 3.05 by 1.65mm. Key features include alow maximum VSWR of 1.35:1, wire bondable terminations, lownominal attenuation of 3 or 4dB depending on the part (otherattenuation and TCA values are possible) and an operatingtemperature range of -55 to +150C.

As with all Thermopad devices, the new temperature variable attenuator can replace closed oropen-loop temperature compensation schemes with a single, passivedevice requiring no external sensor, bias or control.

A singleresistive device is able to replace a host of parts that wouldotherwise be required, reducing total system cost and enhancingreliability.

In addition, since Thermopad is a resistive device,no distortion is added by implementing temperature compensation.Using a different design with respect to earlier Thermopadproducts, the KTVA is based on a distributed parameter approachthat employs coupled microstrip lines on an aluminium oxidesubstrate.

Thermistors deposited in the same microstripconfiguration act as lossy lines and vary the coupling betweenthe adjacent lines as their resistance shifts with temperature. This unique approach overcomes the problems associated withgeometry and parasitics to produce a temperature variableattenuator suitable for use above 18GHz.

Typical applications forthe KTVA include amplifiers, K- and Ka-band satellitecommunications, transceivers, receivers and point-to-pointcommunications equipment.

The KTVA is protected under US patent5,332,981 and two other US patent applications.
