Power connection system
simplifies cPCI backplanes
Elma Electronic has reduced cPCI backplane delivery times and increased power supply choice for prototype and low volume applications, by developing a modular power connection system
A wide range of plug-in and wired power supplies can now be linked to more than 100 of Elma's cPCI and H110 backplanes. Elma believes that with 20 power options, it now offers one of the industry's widest combinations of power and cPCI configurations. Designers can now optimise both their power and cPCI backplane selections, in the knowledge that any combination is available within three weeks.

The system is based on a universal power module (UPM), which not only improves time to market for new designs, but also simplifies mid-project changes in power requirements without requiring the replacement of the main cPCI backplane.
It can also provide a versatile stand-alone power interface for existing backplanes and systems.
The power options include one, two and four Type M or Positronic connectors, a variety of bolt and push-on terminals, ATX connectors, and redundant Positronic connectors for high availability systems.

Elma reckons it is providing the best of both worlds with the integration of 10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet network technology on VME 64x backplanes
Full support is provided for PICMG 2.11 control signals and serial I2C system management bus signals, with two connectors available for access to status signals, in addition to direct links to the cPCI backplane.
Although the UPM is normally provided with an interconnection board, and bolted to the left of the cPCI signal backplane, the cable connection option enables power to be fitted to the right of the cPCI backplane.
AC/DC input is via passthrough crimp connections or 3-pin AMP Mate-N-Lock.
Provision is also available for powering disc drives and optical discs from the UPM through standard power connectors or Faston terminals.
