Elcon Products has introduced an expanded version of its popular Mini Crown Edge high density, low profile, board-to-board power connector that is designed primarily for high current delivery from 1 and 2U Voltage regulator modules (VRM).
VRM technology is developing rapidly presenting the designer with an increasingly complex interconnect problem.
Until recently, VRMs were placed on the power board but as voltages have been reduced they are now designed as separate modules that require a special, high power and versatile connector with low inductance.
Elcon introduced the Mini Crown Edge system in 2003 to address this market and it has now been expanded to include a highly practical mix of signal and power contacts.
Unlike other VRM connectors available that use U-shaped low current contacts, Mini Crown Edge is a true power interconnect using well proven Elcon Crown Band power contacts.
This enables it to meet the high power requirements of modern VRM applications.
In addition, the low-profile contacts have a short path length that ensures low loop Inductance levels.
Mini Crown Edge is a more reliable and space saving alternative to card edge connectors for the delivery of high currents.
It is available in several form factors to suit different applications.
In its standard form, Mini Crown Edge features 12 individual and isolated power contacts and 18 signal contacts in a package that is less than four inches long.
Mini Crown Edge is designed to meet the thermal profile for solder and surface mount applications.
Two latches hold the VRM to the connector and are robust enough to accommodate 1 and 2U VRMs.
The connector's low-profile design allows more room for placement of components on the VRM board.
The Mini Crown Edge connector is under evaluation by Underwriters Laboratories for compliance with the UL1977 standard and the CSA standard C22.2 No 182.3-M1987.
