Elcon has enhanced its line of Crown edge card-edge-style high-current power connectors with support for current interruption under load as defined by safety regulatory agencies and new board termination options.
The Crown Edge family consists of a series of versatile modules that use Elcon's high-performance Crown contact technology reconfigured to create a card edge-style socket ideal for high-current distribution applications.
The product family is composed of a series of modules with power, signal and mixed contacts that the design engineer can combine to meet the requirements of the application.
Modules can be placed end-to-end for assemblies up to 203.20mm (8in) long.
Typical applications for crown edge connectors include DC/DC convertors, UPSs, power supplies and any other power delivery system that could benefit from a reliable high-current card edge connector.
New to the Crown Edge family of power connectors is the addition of true hot- plug modules that support current interruption under load as defined by safety regulatory agencies.
This capability is achieved by mating the new Crown Edge true hot plug modules with a metal blade or busbar.
The hot plug modules incorporate especially designed power contacts that confine the effects of arcing to areas that do not compromise the integrity of the connection.
These modules have been evaluated and recognised by Underwriters Laboratories and found to comply with the UL1977 standard for current interruption up to 50 cycles, with a current of 35A at less than 30C temperature rise.
Also, in addition to the compliant press-fit termination available in the original product offering, Crown Edge products now offer the choice of solder termination to the board with two different tail lengths.
The availability of two tails lengths allows soldering Crown Edge connectors to boards from 1.6 to 3.0mm thick.
The current rating that can be achieved with Crown Edge connectors on any given application will depend on the module combination, PCB copper trace volume, and internal equipment temperature and airflow.
The contact system per se is capable of 30A per contact when mated to a PC board.
Mounting and mating to a busbar will increase current carrying capability.
Volume pricing starts at under $1.50 for the four-power-contact modules and less than $2 for the six-power-contact modules.
The product is currently in production.
