Drive filters take military standards onboard

EMC Solutions has a new range of input and output filter sets designed to ensure that variable speed drives meet Def-Stan-59-41 and MIL-STD-461/462 emission levels for below-deck use.

This innovative design structure has evolved with performance and power losses in mind.

Unlike conventional filter technology this range has the advantages of having low earth leakage, due to the optimisation of components used within the filter units.

The output filter has low power losses so that the filter can remain a discrete device yet provide a high level of performance and attenuation that allows standard cable use for compliance.

Both input and output filters are paired to ensure correct matching of power ratings.

These pairs are housed in an aluminium case and encapsulated to provide resistance to shock and vibration while having a low weight and volume.

Neil Harris, Managing Director of EMC Solutions, explains: "Through working closely with major drive manufacturers and QinetiQ, we have managed to develop this range of very high performance filters, which will allow traditionally noisy drives to be used onboard navel vessels".

Major projects have already taken place with the Royal Navy, and the US Navy is currently trialling the devices.

Typical applications include variable speed drives, vector drives, fire pumps, cranes and lifting gear.

Technical advantages include their compact dimensions, high attenuation characteristics, transient protection, low losses, low earth leakage.

The MVSD range of filters is rated from 5 to 500A, and is built in accordance with the relevant BS, VDE, UL, CE and CSA safety standards.

All EMC Solutions filters and power supplies are designed to meet the latest requirements for health and safety, particularly EN133200.
