RDT's Tempus 2000 is the in-flight passenger health monitoring system that famously helped to save the life of Stephen Clarke, a passenger on a British Midland flight last year

Now, the company is working with specialist contract manufacturer EC Electronics to fulfil orders for a version of the system aimed at the corporate airlines and luxury yacht market. Designed for use by cabin crew in medical emergencies, Tempus 2000 monitors a patient's vital signs including blood pressure, pulse rate, temperature, blood oxygen levels and ECG, and provides two-way communication with a ground-based medical team.

New options now available include digital simultaneous voice and data (DSVD) functionality which allows the Tempus to be used via a single connection to a satellite phone or landline and an integral GSM mobile phone option.

EC Electronics is assembling all six of the purpose-built printed circuit boards used in Tempus 2000 and doing all the assembly work on the specialist smart battery charger units.

"Tempus 2000 is a complex product.

As a remote medical monitoring device, the product has to be right first time", explains Ian Cantrill, Director of Operations.

"EC Electronics has the right equipment to help us with this and the expertise to add value to the manufacturing process".

A good example of this added-value is the PCB test procedure.

"The boards were not designed for a bed of nails, but EC Electronics suggested flying probe testing as an alternative and offered to include this in their service.

Now, the boards they deliver are 100% tested, allowing us to move straight to final assembly and functional testing", says Cantrill.

After the two companies worked together on boards for the original Tempus 2000 design, RDT had no hesitation to coming back to EC Electronics for the new work.

Physical proximity of the two Hampshire-based companies was a factor, but it was reliability and expertise that was key.

"We value EC Electronics' input to the production process and are convinced of the benefits of involving an experienced subcontract manufacturer early in development", concludes Cantrill.
