Dynex Semiconductor has completed delivery of 90 GTO-based power electronic "link" assemblies for a GBP 1.5 million order placed by Alstom's Transmission and Distribution (T and D) Sector. The total contract has been supplied within the agreed timescale. The Alstom and Dynex "partnership" has been a remarkable success story due to the joint efforts of the engineering and assembly expertise within both companies.
Dynex built a dedicated assembly and test area at the Lincoln, UK facility and also undertook a restructuring of its engineering resource to facilitate the successful completion of the order.
This equipment is part of a Statcom installation for Northeast Utilities in Connecticut, USA.
The Statcom is a part of Connecticut Light and Power's plans to meet the growing energy needs in the region and alleviate potential difficulties in ensuring a reliable supply to its customers.
The equipment will improve the reliability of supplies during the peak load summer months by providing rapid support for momentary and long-term voltage fluctuations.
Statcom technology, based on voltage source convertors, provides very fast reactive compensation for power systems, improves voltage and power system stabilisation, enhances reliability, and increases power transfer limits.
Dynex has brought together their gate turn-off thyristor (GTO) and fast diode knowledge with its proven assembly techniques to build these "links" to an existing Alstom design.
The main power semiconductor devices incorporated in the Statcom design are Dynex GTO (DG858BW45) and fast diodes rated at 6 and 4.5kV.
Michael LeGoff, President and and CEO said: "This marks the completion of the first step up from manufacturing semiconductor assemblies to complete subsystems.
Our partnership with Alstom T and D has grown stronger over the years and the initial placement of the Statcom order demonstrated the faith Alstom have put in Dynex and its engineering and manufacturing expertise.
At Dynex we have the capability to work with clients on the manufacture of either their designs or joint venture projects, like Statcom and more complex assemblies are our goal for the future".
