Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
Over 85% of Electronicstalk readers now use the internet "several
times a week" to source products or just keep up-to-date with
technology, according to our reader survey last week. That's
something which should make many manufacturers with half-hearted
websites sit up and think. However, the real purpose of the survey
was to canvass your opinion about whether we should change the format
of this newsletter, and your response was overwhelmingly "no",
despite the supposed advantages of other formats.
You voted three-to-one in favour of this text-only email compared to
other formats which might allow us to show you photos, such as PDF.
In your comments, some of you were quite forthright: terms like
"glitz" and "visual clutter" came up again and again in a negative
context. We thought many of you might vote for text because access to
PDF and HTML emails was difficult in the work environment, but that
comment was made by very few readers; most of you can read PDF and
HTML emails quite straightforwardly, it's just that you don't want
them that way! We're listening.
Finally, one other very strong opinion we noticed which we'll pass on
to manufacturers: we asked how you like information requested from
suppliers to be sent to you, and 94% said "by email". An exercise we
undertook here recently suggested that over 50% of suppliers still
send out catalogues, brochures and datasheets by post.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In
addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are
hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do
take a look if you can. Alternatively, the full stories behind all
the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by
email alone: see details below.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make
the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes
Laurence Marchini, Editor

[5] MULTICHANNEL DACS ADDRESS DESIGN CONCERNS
(Analog Devices, 08 Nov 2005)
Analog Devices is introducing eight multichannel monolithic
digital-to-analogue convertors (DACs) that pack the highest
concentration of analogue signal processing performance in a single
device. Developed using Analog Devices' patented iCMOS process
technology, the new DACs extend the company's DenseDAC family of
high-density convertors, combining up to 40 channels, high accuracy,
and +/-10V output range, in a compact (9 x 9mm) footprint. New
programmable on-chip features, such as calibration registers (to
compensate for signal errors) and automatic shutdown, ensure system
reliability in harsh, high voltage industrial environments, while
simplifying board layout.

[7] POWER MANAGER DEVICES PROVIDE PRECISE MONITORING
(Lattice Semiconductor UK, 08 Nov 2005)
Lattice Semiconductor has introduced its second generation Power
Manager II devices, along with details of the first device available,
the ispPAC-POWR1220AT8. The Power Manager II family is a functional
superset of Lattice's earlier award winning ispPAC power manager
mixed-signal devices. Analogue features such as input comparator
thresholds and digital functions such as supply control sequences are
programmed into non-volatile E2CMOS elements on the devices using an
IEEE1149.1 protocol. The new Power Manager II devices add power
supply margining and trimming to first generation device features,
such as power supply voltage sequencing and monitoring.

[9] CONNECTORS MEET SIGNALLING NEEDS FOR FPDS
(Molex UK, 03 Nov 2005)
Molex has introduced a range of high-density FFC/FPC connectors
designed for flat panel displays (FPD) and other applications. These
large circuit size connectors offer robustness, ease-of-use and low
applied costs, which makes them ideal for FPD applications that
sometimes require up to 1000 signal lines per unit to support
extremely high resolution flat-screen picture clarity. Molex's
smallest pitch size of the family is a 0.30mm version that includes
staggered tails to achieve its compact 90-circuit design. This
version provides one of the largest circuit size options of any
0.30mm pitch type in the market.
