Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
I can't say that I'm too surprised by this week's claim by Spamhaus
(widely reported elsewhere) that by 2006, 95% of all e-mail traffic
will be spam. The ne[-email removed-]nicstalk.com submissions address is
bombarded daily with literally hundreds of spam messages, not to
mention viruses and scams, in addition to bona fide submissions for
the Electronicstalk website.
Not surprisingly, we have to employ some pretty heavy spam filters to
sift the wheat from the chaff, and inevitably the occasional valid
e-mail will be inadvertently blocked. But I guess that's the price we
have to pay. If only spam were as easy to filter as regular
"through-the-letterbox" junk mail.
But if anyone out there considers the Electronicstalk Newsletter to be
spam, do please feel free to unsubscribe using the personalised link
either on the first page or at the foot of the newsletter.
Assuming you decline that offer, you'll find a plethora of
exhibition-related launches, with semiconductor companies in
particular readying their latest handset offerings for launch at 3GSM
in Cannes.
And, talking of the semiconductor sector, there is a link in our news
section to the latest report from industry analyst Future Horizons,
predicting another double-digit year of growth. However, the cloud to
the silver lining is the continuing decline of the European share of
the market.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In
addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are
hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do
take a look if you can.
Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines
in this newsletter can be retrieved by e-mail alone: see details
below.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make
the site or the newsletter better, e-mail me directly.
Best wishes

[2] PATTERN GENERATORS SUIT R AND D AND ATE
(Spectrum Systementwicklung Microelectronic, 08 Feb 2005)
The 72xx card family is billed as a unique system solution for
universal pattern generation. The cards can be used in chip, printer
and display production tests as well as in research and development.
The main differentiating factor of the new 72xx series compared with
standard digital pattern generators is the ability to program low and
high level signals with 10mV resolution. For each of the four channels
the levels can be individually programmed between -2 and +10V.

(Analog Devices, 08 Feb 2005)
Building on its heritage in RF technology innovation and wireless
systems design expertise, Analog Devices has unveiled a chip that
shrinks the radio in cellular telephones to as little as 1.5cm2. The
new Othello-G radio chip for GSM/GPRS communications enabled a fully
functional reference design with approximately 75% fewer components
than its previous version and enabling a complete quad-band radio that
is 30% smaller than anything available on the market.

[4] CONTROLLER ALLOWS SOPHISTICATED POWER MONITORING
(Linear Technology Corp, 07 Feb 2005)
New from Linear Technology, the LTC4260 is a positive high voltage hot
swap controller that features an on-chip 8bit ADC and I2C compatible
interface. This allows for sophisticated power monitoring by measuring
card voltages and currents as well as recording past and present fault
conditions. Information in the ADC's registers can be queried via the
I2C bus to determine if a card is actually using its allocated power
or if it is operating abnormally. An irregular card can be flagged for
service, perhaps even before it fails.

[10] GIGABIT ETHERNET CABLE RESISTS INTERFERENCE
(PIC Wire and Cable, 03 Feb 2005)
PIC Wire and Cable has developed a high performance Gigabit Ethernet
cable designed for harsh environment high speed local area networking
applications up to 70m. It is already becoming a standard within
avionics datacommunications and in-flight entertainment systems. The
twisted pair construction (for separate pairs) effectively reduces
inductive interference, and 100% foil and 92% braided shielding serve
to further protect against EMI. Connectors can be terminated quickly
and easily while maintaining full shielded connection for improved EMC
performance.
