Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
The UK government got into trouble a few years back for waiting for a
massive worldwide news story to break before quietly slipping out some
embarrassing news, knowing it would be largely ignored in favour of the big
story. Expect to see the same over the next few days, with a certain
election making all the main headlines. Similarly, however, with attention
elsewhere, you'd expect organisations with major announcements to give this
week a miss, which may explain why we had another bumper few days for news
in the electronics sector last week.
ARM is to use "handshake technology" from Philips' Handshake Solutions in a
new processor to be available in the first quarter of next year (see below).
The technology is of course widely proven, but its use in a big-name
architecture like ARM's is a notable development. The processor will offer
low EM emission, reducing the probability of interfering with sensitive
circuitry, and low peak currents, reducing system power requirements. In
addition, because asynchronous processors consume zero dynamic power when
there is no activity, they can significantly extend battery life.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to
the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on
our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in
this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the
site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes
