Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
I guess that none of us should be surprised that somebody could be bothered to create a virus specifically targeted at Symbian-based mobile phones. The virus itself - dubbed Cabir - has proved to be relatively harmless, but it does provide a very timely reminder that it is not only Microsoft desktop operating systems that can be prey to such infection.
What's more, its means of proliferation - via Bluetooth - may prove an irresistible temptation for further mischief making.
Let's not forget that the general public is fully aware of the pervasive nature of embedded computing. Such was the all-encompassing hysteria surrounding the so-called Y2K bug that even popular TV series such as "The Simpsons" got in on the act with a nightmare vision of aircraft falling out of the sky, "Homer-cidal" sandwich toasters and self-destructing milk cartons.
Today, it would appear that the average virus creator is something of a sad character, who feels that the only outlet for their creativity is to highlight security flaws in widely deployed software - delivering a binary "up yours" to the multinational, multi-million-dollar corporations who profit from what the virus writer can prove to be a flawed product. Some popular media even laud such characters as "white knights" for beating the system.
The progression from attacking a desktop operating system to that of a cellular handset can be seen as a further instance of a virus being created simply because its originator could.
A psychologist would probably confirm that the typical virus writer would never bother to create code designed to spread through embedded operating systems - however vulnerable they might be - because the user would be unaware that it was happening, thereby denying the writer the satisfaction of publicity.
At least, that's what I'm hoping. Toasted sandwich anyone?

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
[1] PHASE-CHANGE MEMORY PROMISES FLASH REPLACEMENT
(STMicroelectronics, 21 June 2004)
STMicroelectronics is claiming significant progress in the development of a new type of electronic memory that could eventually replace Flash memory technology. The new technology, called phase-change memory (PCM), potentially offers better performance than Flash, with benefits such as faster read and write times, greater endurance, and the ability to write to individual memory addresses. Most importantly, it is also inherently more scalable than Flash and other nonvolatile memory technologies in use today.

[2] NOVEL TECHNOLOGY RAISES DSL BANDWIDTH FOR HD VIDEO
(Texas Instruments, 16 June 2004)
Texas Instruments has developed a new high-bandwidth DSL technology that is backwards compatible with operators' current infrastructure and will make it possible to add competitive video service revenue to their existing data and voice services. TI's Uni-DSL (UDSL) technology raises the bandwidth of DSL to the level necessary to deliver high definition television (HDTV) and other advanced video services, as well as voice and data, throughout the home with limited fibre deployment.

[3] SPECTROMETER GETS THE MEASURE OF PB CONTAMINATION
(Fischer Instrumentation (GB), 17 June 2004)
A novel instrument promises accurate assessment of lead contamination as a quality-assurance measure in compliance with the RoHS and WEEE Directives. The Fischer XRF pin diode spectrometer can measure with good accuracy, contamination in the 0.02-0.05% range. This means the instrument can prove that the lead content is below the mandatory level, rather than simply showing that lead contamination is present.

[4] IP PROVIDES PRECISE FFT SOLUTIONS
(RF Engines, 22 June 2004)
The Matrix range of high-specification "building blocks" for digital transceiver designs offers a unique "mix-and-match" way to create precisely tailored FFT solutions that maximise silicon efficiency. The building blocks are supplied as intellectual property (IP) components for system-on-programmable-chip designers. They allow specialised and demanding multichannel receivers to be designed in a much shorter time scale and with a much-reduced technical risk.

[5] UPGRADE FOR THERMAL MODELLING SOFTWARE
(Flomerics, 16 June 2004)
Version 5 of the Flotherm thermal management simulation package claims substantial improvements in the areas of usability, CAD import, compact modelling and numerical stability. Flotherm has become the standard tool for design and optimisation of cooling systems for electronics equipment with a user base twice that of all competitors combined. The menus have been redesigned in the new release to more intuitively guide the user through the modelling process. Analysis accuracy has been improved with a grid-based dissection CAD import method that provides better handling of complex product geometries.

[7] ADDITIVE STENCIL TECHNOLOGY BOOSTS THROUGHPUT
(DEK, 18 June 2004)
DEK's latest additive stencil technology allows users to create deposits of several heights in a single pass, to increase throughput, reduce the number of process steps, and increase equipment use. DEK's solution to creating multiple deposit heights also enhances the lifetime of squeegee blades or the wipers of an enclosed printing head, as well as the stencil. Additive stencil technology can be applied to either side of the stencil. Building up selected areas on the stencil surface allows the height of selected deposits to be increased by between 10 and 100um compared with the nominal height determined by the main stencil thickness.
