Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
We all know that you can prove just about anything with statistics. But every now and again the raw data just jumps out and bites you in the backside.
And when we decided (albeit just for fun) to trawl through our own enquiry statistics for the year we all had certain preconceptions about exactly which companies and which products would likely be attracting the most interest from you the readers.
But to say that there are some surprises in the pack is an understatement.
The top three enquiry generating companies in 2003 are all certainly "sexy beasts". But what is surprising is the failure of any of the top five companies in terms of stories on the site to feature on the "enquiries podium".
So take a cyber step forward to accept a virtual award: in third place, Cypress Semiconductor; in second place, Toshiba Electronics; and the star performer, Philips Semiconductor - which receives the accolade as "The most interesting company on Electronicstalk".
Amazingly, when we come to the individual product awards, not one of those companies features. And the real surprise here is that none of the top three products of the year was released in 2003. But then I guess that's one on the beauties of a website compared with a magazine - stories are seldom ripped out and used to wrap fish and chip suppers. So long as they're still valid, they're still on the site.
In third place comes a story about "Free thermal calculation software" from Pfannenberg (UK) at http://www.electronicstalk.com/news/pfa/pfa101.html.
In second place is "CMOS IC catalogue comes on free CD-ROM" from Seiko Instruments at http://www.electronicstalk.com/news/sei/sei100.html.
But the most enquired about story on Electronicstalk during 2003 comes from (drum roll please) Jungo Software Technologies for its "Driver toolkit puts USB on Windows NT 4.0" at http://www.electronicstalk.com/news/jun/jun104.html.
Now, I'm not one to cast aspersions, but all three stories involve free software. So maybe that says more about our readers than anything else (only joking).
Next week sees the final Electronicstalk Newsletter of 2003, and we'll conclude our review of the year by handing out a few brickbats to those companies who appear to have lost the plot during the course of the year.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

9. Paste-in-hole females need less handling
THTR hm 2.0mm hard metric female connectors from In2Connect can save important time and associated PCB assembly costs. Until now, the most cost-effective means of applying a right-angle female connector was to "press-fit" the connector to the PCB after all the other board components had been placed and reflow soldered. Now, "press-fit" is no longer the solution of choice.
