Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
I have always been of the opinion that Microsoft is quite big enough to look after itself. Indeed, I must admit to a strong admiration for a corporation that has done more in its own marketing to stimulate sales of electronic hardware than just about any other company in the world.
In other words, we all owe Bill and his boys a big debt of gratitude. But, to be honest, it's all too easy at times to point the finger of ridicule. And, no, I'm not referring to the fact that it appears Malaysian pirates can publish software quicker than Microsoft.
Last week, everyone's "favourite" software company hosted a conference on technology, tolls and transportation, and Dick Brass, VP of the company's automotive business unit revealed his vision of his company's operating system running every car on the planet.
But while his bosses' earlier vision of seeing the Widows operating system in every home may well have done much to stimulate sales of home PCs, this latest mission is riding on the back of an ever-increasing electronic content in even the most basic of cars. And, what's more, this time Microsoft has some serious competition.
To make matters even more contentious, this time the vision is based on a forthcoming hardware product, the TBox (which I am assured is not just a rebranded games console), which will form the networking hub of the car of the (near) future, bringing safer hands-free control to entertainment, telematics and other functions.
But, in a week when a number of governments around the world are (quite correctly) considering stiffer penalties for using cellphones while driving, the flaw in any such increase in the use of technology is that it implies the average driver has spare bandwidth while driving.
Any regular road user can testify to the lack of consideration (and common courtesy) of a "significant proportion" of other drivers. Dare I contend that much of the time this is purely down to simple distractions, such as passengers, cigarette lighters, radios etc.
What on earth would these people do when let loose in Microsoft's vision of the future car. Game Over.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Waveform digitiser solves make-versus-buy dilemma
The ATS850 is an OEM-friendly PCI-based waveform digitiser that provides 8bit, 50Msample/s sampling on two simultaneous channels with a fully programmable front-end and trigger circuitry. One of the major challenges faced by the development team was that the ATS850 had to be priced low enough to justify a buy-versus-build decision by customers who wanted to embed a digitiser in their equipment. This challenge was met by using AlazarTech's acquisition system on programmable chip (ASoPC) technology.

2. Polyphonic chip sounds a good idea for handsets
The ML2864 is a new PCM-based sound generator LSI that can play 64 polyphonies simultaneously over eight octaves. The ML2864, the third product of the Oki Swing'nRinger sound generator LSI series, provides high-quality sound with the PCM method and supports global standards including GM System Level 1, which allows easy download of various sound contents. By adapting Oki's unique wafer level chip size package technology, the chip offers the world smallest footprint of its kind.

3. All-metal construction for RF connectors
ITT Industries, Cannon's new range of Fakra RF connectors feature an all-metal construction which greatly increases robustness and simplifies installation. Fakra is a standard developed by the DIN group which specifies the electrical performance and interface of RF connectors for use in road vehicle applications. Cannon's single-piece die-cast connector has no plastic insert, therefore devices are much more robust and easier to install.

4. Half-size CPU boards provide budget ePCI-X intro
Kontron has extended its PICMG 1.2 product range with two new CPU boards that are based on the new, fast ePCI-X standard. The ePCI-101 hosts an Intel Pentium M processor, which is part of the Intel Centrino mobile technology package, and the ePCI-102 is based on a Via Eden processor. The two half-size boards are inexpensive ePCI-X entry-level modules, which are optimised to provide a wide range of applications with the appropriate fanless performance: from genuine 733MHz operation to a performance level that is comparable to that of a 2.7GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor.

5. High-frequency regulators cut down handheld power
The NCP144x series of 280 and 560kHz boost regulators offer design engineers low-cost power conversion solutions for a wide range of battery-operated applications. Each of the four new current-mode boost regulators features a 4A/40V integrated power switch that eliminates the need for an external FET - thus saving cost and board space. The flexibility of the design allows the parts to operate in most power supply configurations, including boost, flyback, forward, inverting and SEPIC.

6. Solid performance from novel hybrid electrolyte
The NSPE series a new range of surface mount aluminium electrolytic capacitors that uses an innovative hybrid electrolyte. This gives performance that is closer to that of more expensive solid aluminium devices than is achieved by conventional liquid electrolyte devices. NSPE capacitors have impedance values as low as 23mohm and ripple current ratings of up to 2.18A RMS (at +105C and 100kHz). They are ideal for use in low-voltage high-current power-management applications.

8. Fractional-load transceivers extend serial comms
Intersil has released three new Linearlink RS485/422 serial data transceivers, the ISL8487, ISL81483 and ISL81487. All three ICs are half-duplex fractional-load transceivers that operate from a nominal 5V supply over a wide +/-10% tolerance voltage range of +4.5 to +5.5V, which relaxes supply requirements and reduces costs. The quiescent current for these devices is extremely low and the ISL8487 and ISL81483 become almost invisible in the shutdown mode with a miniscule 1nA drip.
