Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

Now there can be no doubt. We are all latter day Frankensteins, creating monsters that will surely rage beyond our control - or so you might think if you pay too much attention to the latest ethical dilemma blamed on electronic technology.

Hot on the heels of perverts and crooks misusing camera phones comes the spectre of "Big Brother" brought about by the increased use of RFID technology. And now that the popular media have found out that RFID tags are no longer limited to bulky bracelets worn by young offenders to enforce home curfews, no doubt we will be seeing many more headlines about invasion of privacy and limitation of civil liberties.

(And true conspiracy theorists will no doubt claim that there are RFID tags embedded in the very newspapers running those headlines!)

In truth, the furore is not all smoke and mirrors. For example, Consumers Against Supermarket Privacy Invasion and Numbering (or CASPIAN) puts a very lucid case in its position statement (www.privacyrights.org/ar/RFIDposition.htm).

But - as I have said before in these columns - within every problem there is always a solution and an opportunity waiting to be exploited.

CASPIAN itself proposes one, in the form of a so-called "blocking tag", and it wouldn't exactly be rocket science to produce such a device that would emit on a broad spectrum to jam RFID readers within any given range. However, the potential for interference with other - less contentious - radio systems might cause a few problems (not least with other low-power systems like Bluetooth).

But surely it would be better to deploy a passive solution - and one that solves one of the great environmental problems of the 21st century at the same time.

I refer to the humble shopping bag or, as we might call it, a portable Faraday cage.

We are all being urged to forsake the ubiquitous plastic carrier bag in favour of re-usable alternatives. And it wouldn't take too much conductive material to manufacture a shopping bag that provided the necessary durability combined with all-round screening to fox any practical attempt to read its contents.

The marketing fraternity would have a field day!

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.

Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.

In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.

Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. DSP squeezes in more peripherals

A new highly integrated DSP chip aims to reduce overall system costs and open the door to designers in need of affordable DSPs to handle high-performance capabilities. The C6412 is suited for a wide variety of high-performance applications and is particularly ideal in signal processing areas such as telecom infrastructure, networking and high-end imaging. This is due in part to a rich set of peripherals, including an on-chip Ethernet MAC (media access controller), peripheral component interconnect (PCI) port, host port interface (HPI) as well as generous on-chip RAM.

7. MOSFET features submilliohm on-state resistance

Philips has developed the world's first sub-1mohm MOSFET. This device demonstrates a significant reduction of approximately 40% in on-state resistance for MOSFETs compared with conventionally packaged products. It also demonstrates a host of technology advancements that will be implemented in new power management products. By reaching extremely low levels of on resistance, designers can better manage power distribution, reduce board space and improve electrical efficiency within their systems.
