Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

I'm always very wary of Internet polls. You know the sort of think: a website will try to poll your opinion of a burning issue of the day - and of course it's so easy to register your view that it seems churlish not to do so.

But if anybody ever needed any proof that such polls are easy prey for any interest group that wants to promote its point of view, they should take a look at the site hosted by the Sydney Morning Herald.

Since Monday morning, visitors to www.smh.com.au have been asked to give their view on the performance of the England rugby team in defeating France in Sunday's Rugby World Cup Semi-Final. The options range from "Scintillating" to "Dull, dull, dull", and it's no secret that the organisers of the poll were hoping for a negative response ahead of next Saturday's Final between England and hosts Australia.

However, all it took was a small e-mail campaign run by a UK-based sports website urging folks in England to log on and vote, and the organisers of the poll were shocked to wake up on Tuesday morning to find that 80% of voters thought England to be "Scintillating". Ah well, we do call it the worldwide web.

Fortunately, here at Electronicstalk we have access to data that are much more meaningful, and between now and the end of the year we will be using them to compile our list of the Electronicstalk Awards for 2003.

It will be interesting to find out which company's pages have been accessed most often, which products have attracted the most enquiries, and which websites you the readers have accessed via Electronicstalk. But we haven't forgotten the "Hall of Shame".

We will also be naming those companies who have produced the most meaningless stories, butchering the English language and misusing units and abbreviations while expecting all of us to understand what they mean. (Currently leading the way is an - as-yet - unnamed US company who couldn't believe I had never heard of KSI as a unit of stress).

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.

Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.

In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.

Oh, and by the way we're all supposed to know that KSI stands for kilo-pounds per square inch.

Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. FHSS transceiver shrinks to multichip module

A new miniature all-inclusive 900MHz FHSS transceiver breaks new ground in the short-range wireless market. The one-inch-square module becomes the key component for creating local RF networks where tight space, low power and limited resources are the OEM's biggest concerns. AeroComm reckons the AC4490-1x1 is so comprehensive that engineers of varying RF experience can design-in full wireless capability with minimal effort. All components, including firmware, are integrated into its sleek multichip-module design.
