Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
This week sees two significant anniversaries.
On the down side, it is 20 years since US student Fred Cohen devised the world's first computer virus. Not surprisingly, he invented it to test the security of computer systems. But little can he have imagined how "popular" his progeny would become.
On the up side, though, Electronicstalk is three years old. And what began as a tentative toe in the world of web-based publishing has now become one of the largest resources of electronics information on the Internet - and a friend of the earth, to boot.
Some of the statistics are pretty mind-boggling.
Just the mere notion of more than thirteen and a half thousand stories in the same place is pretty impressive. And when you combine that with a monthly hit rate exceeding 200,000 visitors it leaves me to wonder just how many hectares of forest we've saved by publishing that material on the web - rather than on paper.
Our newsletter circulation has now topped 20,000 - which is pretty small fry compared with some of the controlled circulation magazines of the 1980s and 1990s. But, to put it in context, that's 20,000 of you who have requested to receive the newsletter. Anyone who feels they have made a mistake can easily unsubscribe. And if you're too busy on any given week you can always hit the delete key.
Discarded copies of the Electronicstalk newsletter are never used to wrap fish and chip suppers - and they don't end up in land-fill sites.
But then I'm clearly preaching to the converted. If you're reading these words you probably haven't read a paper-based magazine since you can remember, you probably get your daily fix of news at your desk from an online source and the closest you get to paper is when you print something out to pin on the wall.
So, as we raise a glass to celebrate our birthday let's spare a thought for those traditional paper-based titles that are no longer with us and praise the net for saving our trees.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes
Laurence Marchini, Editor

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. LED drivers provide true analogue dimming control
A new range of white LED drivers feature the novel option of an integrated true analogue dimming mode, offering a noise-free alternative to pulsed dimming control. The ZXLD1100 and ZXLD1101 inductive boost converters can produce an adjustable linear output current for controlling the brightness of series connected LEDs used in colour LCD backlighting. With a PWM signal of greater than 10kHz applied to its internally filtered enable pin, the ZXLD1100 series IC produces an output current that is linearly proportional to the duty cycle of the enable pin signal.

6. Thermal interface materials are clean alternatives
Two new phase change thermal interface materials provide a clean and effective alternative to messy thermal grease. Thermflow T454 and T506 consist of an electrically nonconductive dry film that softens at device operating temperatures to provide a thin, thermally efficient interface between a component and heatsink or other heat-dissipating surface. T454 has a thickness of 0.13mm and is designed for use in applications where the mating parts have smooth surfaces. T506 is 0.25mm thick and is suited to applications with larger surface areas or poor flatness.
