Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

At the risk of appearing to be the technology journalist equivalent of an "ambulance chaser", I must admit that for the last week I have been keeping a close watch on news media around the world for stories of communications blackouts caused by solar storms. (Or maybe it's my "greenie" streak that wants to see tales of Mother Nature fighting back against technology.)

But, rather like the Millennium Bug, predictions of global chaos have been greatly exaggerated.

Just in case anyone has failed to notice, our own dear Sun (that's the star, not the tabloid) has been having a few "hiccups" of late, producing electromagnetic emissions of the like not seen since 1989.

But whereas the storms of 1989 caused widespread interference to communications - in space, in the air and even on the ground - in comparison, the past week's activity has hardly caused a hiccup.

And while it is true that this week's events were predicted with sufficient notice for vulnerable satellites to be put on standby and for alternative routings to be put in place, the improved performance is due in no small part to the vast advances in EMC techniques during the intervening period.

The undeniable fact that today's communications technologies have enormously improved immunity to electromagnetic interference speaks volumes for the cumulative global implications of the EU EMC Directive. In this - at least - Europe has led the world in raising standards across the board.

It is strange to think that back in 1989 there was a campaign afoot to postpone (or even scrap) the implementation of the directive. It's a good job it was only postponed.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.

Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.

In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.

Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Step-down controller integrates active PFC

The NCP1651 is an integrated controller that facilitates the simplest possible implementation of power-factor corrected, isolated power convertors and reduces both part count and overall design costs for power conversion applications such as battery chargers and distributed power systems up to 200W. The NCP1651 provides a low-cost, low component-count solution that is compliant with IEC1000-3-2 harmonic standards for isolated AC/DC convertors with mid to high output voltage requirements.

2. Simulator irons out process bugs before production

A new software product promises considerable cost reductions during the development of integrated circuits and substantially higher yields in chip production. Dortmund-based Zkom reckons that the typical cost of developing a typical new device is of the order of US $500 million. And at the same time, the technical risks of new developments are rising owing to the increasing complexity and miniaturisation of electronic chips. But now a realistic and fully software-based can optimise the entire process chain from chip design to mass production.

3. Shielded jacks cut network noise

Integrating a copper alloy shield within its plastic housing, the latest jack connector from FCI provides increased protection against EMI when mated with shielded male connectors and offers savings in PCB space and offboard height. The single-port RJ45 right-angle connector has eight contact loaded positions and suits low-profile network interface cards.

4. Batteries adapt to aid innovative design

Battery shape and size no longer needs to constrain product design following the introduction of a new rechargeable battery technology that can be customised in terms of size, shape and performance. Poliflex from Varta Microbattery is a new lithium polymer battery technology available from Micromark C and CD, which results in slimline very light rechargeable batteries that can be configured to customer requirements.

New Forest Electronics has become UK distributor for the FSA32 PC based serial data analyser made by Fifo Electronics in Sweden. This product is a Windows based protocol analyser for debugging asynchronous serial communications. It uses the standard COM ports of a PC, and does not require any other hardware except for the physical connection to the line.

8. Compact TCXOs aim for handset integration

The NT3225 series are SMD temperature-compensated crystal oscillators measuring just 3.2 x 2.5mm with a maximum height of only 1.2mm. Standard frequencies include 12.6, 13.0, 14.4, 19.2, 19.68, 19.8 and 26MHz with other frequencies available. The NT3225 exhibits very low phase noise performance of -137dBc/Hz (typical) 1kHz at offset. It is applicable to the low supply voltage of +2.4+/-0.1V DC while consuming only 1.5mA maximum with a load of 10kohm/10pF.

9. Steady as you go for stable RF log amp

The MAX2015 is billed as the industry's first RF log amplifier to fully cover the 0.1 to 2.5GHz band with exceptional dynamic range and +/-1dB precision over temperature. The device can be configured as a simple RF power detector or as a complete closed-loop controller. The outstanding combination of precision and dynamic range makes this log amplifier particularly useful in a variety of basestation and other wireless applications.
