Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

Anyone who still harbours the slightest doubt that China will become the high-tech centre of the 21st century world should take a closer look at the latest data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (www.oecd.org).

The latest issue of the OECD Science, Technology and Industry Scoreboard covers data for 2001, and ranks China third - behind only the USA and Japan - in total R and D spending. And while the total sum of almost US $60 billion equates to only 1.1% of the country's GDP, that is a huge rise from the 0.6% recorded in 1996.

The USA still leads the way in both absolute terms, with $282 billion amounting to 2.8% of GDP, but the meteoric rise of China remains the most striking feature of the report.

Elsewhere in the "old world", the UK is on a par with the average for the EU nations in investing a less-than-stirring 1.9% of GDP on R and D, bringing doubts as to the likelihood of the union meeting its target percentage of 3% by 2010.

Speaking as one of those 76.4% of people who believe that 84.2% of all statistics are made up on the spot, I have to admit that its all too easy to read too much into headline numbers like these. But when you combine China's population and natural resources with a willingness to innovate it is easy to see how the country is equipping itself to challenge the old world order.

The "Long March" may have taken a few detours over the years, but perhaps its end is in sight.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.

Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.

In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.

Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Novel sticker has potential to oust heatsinks

Stick-it Flexible is a novel sticker-type heat radiation material for dissipating heat generated from electronic equipment during operation. The Stick-it Flexible, developed by Oki with the collaboration with Ceramission Co, is quite flexible, and can be cut by scissors and stuck to even curved metallic surfaces. This product is based on the technology of heat-radiating liquid ceramic paint, which was also developed by two companies. Oki will begin the shipment of the heat radiation sticker this month.

2. Audio processor IC targets wireless applications

The THAT4320S is a single-chip analogue engine optimised for low-voltage, low-power operation. It incorporates a high-performance voltage controlled amplifier (VCA), an RMS-level sensor and four op amps. The surface-mount part is aimed at battery-operated audio applications like wireless microphones, wireless instruments and personal monitors. It operates down to +4.5V DC, drawing only 3.7mA. It offers improved performance and value over THAT's own 4311 low-voltage dynamics processor.

3. Easy mounting for SMT inductors and chokes

A new series of surface-mount inductors and chokes are designed for a wide range of switch mode power supply applications. They are used to suppress and filter AC ripple current in the DC output circuit, and they can also be used for energy storage and common mode noise attenuation. The SMT devices feature toroidal cores in a convenient surface-mount package. The unique header design provides quick and efficient installation by incorporating a new wire-clamping feature that lowers the time required in the manufacturing process.
