Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

The Internet is a strange mistress. Clearly, Electronicstalk would not exist without it. Yet it would appear (to this observer at least) that all those predictions about increasing web traffic, spam, worms and viruses slowing the net to a snail's pace are coming horribly true.

One of our key missions is to publish news about the electronics industry as soon as it happens - and certainly way ahead of anything possible in traditional printed media (remember them?). But when a simple e-mail message can take anything up to nine days to reach its destination you really start to wonder whether it's all worthwhile.

That's right - you didn't misread that last bit. Admittedly, nine days is something of a record, but during the past two weeks something in excess of 300 messages have taken more than 48 hours to reach my desk from their senders.

Of course, when one tries to investigate the causes of such snail mail, everyone reckons it's somebody else's problem. Indeed, unless a message originates and terminates with the same Internet service provider there will always be ample scope for passing the buck.

Over the past few days I have been conducting some unstructured research, making random visits to ISP home pages to try to find some clues to the sources of the problem. Worryingly, I unearthed more complaints about other ISPs than instances where a provider was actually holding its hands up and admitting to problems with its own servers. (One UK ISP went so far as to blame just about every other provider in the market!)

Top marks, though, go to Australia's part-private/part-government telecomms giant Telstra - itself no stranger to criticism. The company's BigPond Internet operation has not merely acknowledged that there is a problem with its e-mail servers, it has already allocated AU $25 million to compensate its subscribers.

No doubt the global phenomenon is a temporary one brought on by an extraordinary combination of events. However, it does bring it home that we have all come to rely so heavily on reliable e-mail communication that the consequences of its failure do not bear thinking about.

I have even heard one conspiracy theorist who contends that the slow-down is a co-ordinated plan by certain national carriers as a prelude to introducing a premium-price first-class e-mail service! Now, that's what I call creative thinking.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.

Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.

In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.

Best wishes

2. SMD convertor saves space at the point of load

The Y5117P is heralded as the industry's first surface mountable, vertical SIP point-of-load (POL) convertor. This 17A product is an extension of Power-One's advanced maXyz product line and was developed at Power-One's Silicon Power Systems Division. The combination of a wide-input voltage range (3.0 to 13.2V DC) and a programmable output (0.7 to 3.6V DC) allows the use of just one part in many intermediate bus architecture (IBA) POL applications, providing customers with cost savings in inventory and supply-chain management.

4. Silent fans find new form factors

Panther quiet cooling fan technology is now available in new form factors ranging from 60 to 92mm. Panther fans operate by converting a conventional low-frequency signal to a high-frequency signal. By operating at switching levels above 20kHz, Panther fans produce a soft commutation that results in a quiet operation that is above the audible range for human hearing.
