Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
I don't seem to be able to get off the subject of US politicians at the moment, but it would be remiss of me not to draw the proverbial line under the aspirations of US Congressman Darrell Issa, who you may remember had been campaigning to exclude "un-American" GSM from Iraq in favour CDMA.
Well, it's now official. The Iraqi Communications Ministry has awarded three licences for mobile services - and all three consortia will be using GSM.
Elsewhere this week (and detailed below), that doyen of market research companies Frost and Sullivan has published its appraisal of the maturing Bluetooth market. And interesting reading it is too.
For although the study predicts continuing strong growth for the technology, with chipset shipments of 10 million in 2001 rising to 34 million in 2002 and projected to reach 70 million this year, it concludes that price will become a significant factor in the near future.
Those who recall the original launch of the technology will remember that it was always billed as a $5 feature. But it seems that may be just too expensive. So don't expect to see too many companies becoming fat on Bluetooth revenues.
Bluetooth may not be the world-changing technological advance it originally promised, nor has it become a household name. But, as the study points out, it has no clear competitor in the personal area networking space.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes
