Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

Electronicstalk's campaign to outlaw the misabbreviation of bits and bytes has gathered pace over the past week, with a huge number of messages of support from readers who have been "stung by misleading b's" as one reader put it.

A number of people have likened the problem to the similarities in the SI system of standard prefixes where, for example, the difference between a lower case m (milli-) and an upper case M (mega-) covers many orders of magnitude.

But let's not forget that the SI system is a published international standard. In comparison, the use of b for bit and B for byte has never - to my knowledge - been set in stone by any standards organisation. It is merely a convention - and one on which different people disagree, to boot!

Suffice it to say that my file of transgressors is growing daily, and the worst culprits will be "outed" mercilessly.

And while we're on the subject, one reader has drawn my attention to a (tongue in cheek) massive scam perpetrated by hard disk drive manufacturers. We all know (I hope) that prefixes for bits and bytes are based on a binary system, rather than base 10. Hence K is 2 to the 10th power (1024), and M is 2 to the 20th power etc.

However, it would appear that disk drive manufacturers have taken to expressing G as merely 10 to the 9th power - rather than 2 to the 30th power. Don't worry - I'll save you the maths: this means we are being short changed to the tune of 74Mbyte per gigabyte. It makes you wonder whether they apply the same practices to their balance sheets!

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.

Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.

In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.

Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Novel cell technology shrinks SRAM sizes

A novel range of low-power 16Mbit SRAM products known as superSRAMs offers the world's smallest chip size of approximately 32mm2. This is achieved through a new memory cell technology that combines an SRAM cell using a TFT and a DRAM cell using a stacked capacitor. The initial phase of the range comprises the 16Mbit R1LA1616R series (1.8V) and R1LV1616R series (3V). These are suitable for use in portable devices such as mobile phones and industrial applications such as POS terminals.

3. DAB-ready radio design runs on budget Blackfin DSP

The CSM1 DAB-ready digital radio reference design breaks the DAB module cost barrier of $25, enabling digital radio manufacturers to advance towards high-performance, cost-effective products. This achievement has been made possible by Sonarics' unique technology for implementing the radio in software on a low-cost general-purpose DSP. The chip used in the CSM1 is from the Analog Devices Blackfin DSP family and sells for less than US $5.
