Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
"Deadlines are wonderful things", as the late Douglas Adams once said, "I love the whooshing sound they make as they go past".
And while the author of the legendary "Hitchhiker" series was supposedly referring to his own indiscipline in delivering his work on time, he might just as well have been referring to the British electronics industry - or so we are led to believe by the results of a survey by ERA Technology (see below).
The survey, which covered a representative sample of the industry, reveals an alarming lack of knowledge and activity in the lead up to the implementation of the EU Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive. But should we be surprised?
The industry has a particularly poor record in applying legislation from Brussels. Remember the EMC Directive? Who is to say that there won't be a last-minute stay of execution in this case as well? (And who is to say that the UK is alone in dragging its heels?)
Certainly, RoHS will require some major changes to manufacturing techniques. The switch to lead-free soldering alone will cause major headaches and necessitate some serious redesigns to existing product lines. Which - with little more than two years to go - makes the findings of the ERA survey all the more disappointing.
It is some 20 years since British industry embraced the concepts of just-in-time manufacturing. Perhaps now it is time to abandon the idea of just-in-time compliance.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Little progress in move to lead-free processes
ERA Technology has just completed a survey of the UK electronics industry to find how ready it is to make the transition from tin/lead solders to lead-free solders, and to lead-free components. The findings show that many manufacturers know little about the implications of the "Restriction of use of certain Hazardous Substances" (RoHS) Directive and know even less about the problems that can occur with lead-free soldering. The survey was supported by the ERA Foundation.

2. Engine streamlines low-volume embedded designs
The General Embedded Machine Engine (GEME) enables anyone to quickly implement motion control, vision capabilities, remote I/O and other functions in factory automation or machine control systems, video surveillance, visual inspection and other applications. Comprising a compact chassis with embedded SBC, embedded software, onboard Flash or 2.5in HDD storage and PSU, and supported by PMC and PC/104 special function interface modules, the GEME range streamlines hardware and software development, eliminates design risk and reduces manufacturing costs.

3. Four-channel oscilloscope on a single card
The M78 is a complete four-channel oscilloscope on a single M-Module mezzanine card. The oscilloscope offers a resolution of 12bit, a bandwidth of up to 10MHz and a sampling rate of up to 50Msample/s simultaneously for all four channels. Signal/noise ratio is 64dB at 3.58MHz. A local 16Mbyte RAM - 4Mbyte per channel - buffers the converted values. Data are available after the sampling process and the buffer contents can be transferred to the host.

4. Firmware lets Bluetooth peripherals boot alone
Cambridge Silicon Radio has added HID proxy capability to the features a CSR BlueCore based USB dongle can support, allowing Bluetooth human interface devices (HIDs), such as mice and keyboards, to be used when a PC is booting - before the main OS has loaded. Current USB Bluetooth dongles are generic devices that rely on software running under the main OS to provide the full range of Bluetooth functions - including connections to mice and keyboards.

5. Charger chipset boosts multicell battery life
A new chipset features three advanced battery management ICs for two-, three- or four-series cell battery packs used in portable medical appliances, notebook computers, test and measurement and industrial equipment. TI's new battery fuel gauge, protection analogue front end (AFE) chip and secondary protection device provide portable designers with reduced quiescent current, increased efficiency and protection, while maintaining lower component count and cost.

6. Membrane switches are sealed for long life
Traditional membrane switches use pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA) in order to bond the individual circuit layers together. These adhesives however yield a rough surface structure, which in an assembled membrane switch leads to small micro fissures that allow fluids and solvents to ingress over time. In order to prevent this, Bergquist has developed HeatSeal, and Schurter is now offering HeatSeal solutions for harsh environment applications where traditional membrane switches constructed with pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA) are limited or not suitable.

7. Infiniband connectors break 2.5Gbit/s speed limit
A new series of high-speed connectors is capable of handling datarates up to 5Gbit/s while delivering improved mechanical and electrical performance. Ideal for use in wide bandwidth applications, including high-end supercomputers, the new assemblies support Infiniband Trade Association 4x and 12x technology specifications. The new DG1 series feature Infiniband-compliant 4x and 12x receptacles and cable assemblies. Differential impedance is down to just 100ohm, and crosstalk is less than 2% (at 100ps edge).

8. Programmable devices for frugal system awareness
Cypress MicroSystems claims to have developed the industry's lowest-power, system-aware range of PSoC (programmable system-on-chip) devices for portable, Flash-based applications, including remote sensors, handheld instruments and portable consumer electronics. With a typical sleep current of just 3uA - with all power supervisory functions turned on - PSoC offers the lowest system power consumption in the industry for Flash-based applications, enabling true portability and maximum flexibility at a very competitive price.

9. Novel package cuts discrete size and heat
Philips has a new generation of small discrete leadless devices packaged using quad flat nonleaded (QFN) technology. The new SOT88x package family provides designers of space-constrained applications an excellent choice for optimising system performance in terms of PCB area and height while adding "discrete" functionality in a true mass production package. The high performance and extremely small size of the SOT88x family make it ideal for applications such as LCD backlight related devices, DC/DC conversion, ESD protection devices and small-signal switching transistors.

10. Programmable calibrator cuts display costs
The MAX1512 is a programmable VCOM adjustment solution for thin-film transistor (TFT) liquid-crystal displays (LCDs). The device simplifies the labour-intensive VCOM adjustment process and replaces mechanical potentiometers, significantly reducing labour costs, increasing reliability, and enabling automation. The MAX1512 attaches to an external-resistive voltage divider and sinks a programmable current to set the VCOM voltage level.
